Chapter 8 - The Escape to the Pantry

The violent thud of a boot against the exterior siding shook the framed family portraits hanging along the hallway wall. Maya let out a muffled sob, terrified by the sudden noise, but Leo clamped a small hand over her mouth just like he had seen his mother do, demonstrating a sudden, heartbreaking maturity. Clara moved swiftly through the dark, her familiarity with the layout of her home allowing her to navigate the cluttered hallway without stumbling.

"Keep low and stay right behind me," Clara commanded in a harsh whisper, reaching out to guide Mara by the sleeve of her puffer jacket.

They reached the kitchen archway, the air smelling faintly of old coffee grounds and dried rosemary from the pantry shelves. Clara fumbled along the wall until her fingers found the heavy wooden door of the walk-in pantry, pulling it open with a soft, practiced creak. The pantry was completely pitch black, smelling of flour sacks and canned goods that had lined the wooden racks for decades.

"In, quickly," Clara urged, pushing Mara and the children past the shelves toward the far corner of the small room.

Mara hoisted the heavy infant car seat with one hand, keeping the blinking drive shielded, while she herded Leo and Maya into the cramped space. Clara knelt down behind a stack of wooden crates and heaved upward on a heavy iron ring set directly into the floorboards. A wooden trapdoor swung upward with a groaning screech, revealing a steep set of brick stairs leading down into the cool, damp earth of the root cellar below.

"Down the stairs, now," Clara instructed, holding the edge of the trapdoor to keep it from slamming shut.

"Go all the way to the back wall where the old storm bulkhead exits to the garden."

As Mara began guiding the children down the steep, crumbling brick steps, a bright beam of white flashlight cut through the kitchen doorway behind them.

"They're in the kitchen!" a harsh voice shouted from the dining room.
