Chapter 4 - The Contents of the Carrier

Mara froze, her gaze darting downward to the blue-swaddled infant carrier sitting innocently near the coat rack. The baby inside still hadn't made a single sound, no whimpering, no fussing, not even the heavy breathing typical of a sleeping infant after a long, stressful journey. The silence emanating from the molded plastic shell felt unnatural, heavy, and suffocatingly thick.

"What are you talking about?" Mara stammered, taking a defensive step backward until the back of her legs hit the edge of the hallway table.

"She's just sleeping. She's exhausted from the drive."

"That's not what the note says," Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper as she pointed a shaking finger at the paper on the floor.

"Pick it up, Mara. Read it out loud so your children understand the kind of danger you just parked in my driveway."

Leo crept forward on tiptoes, his curiosity overriding his fear as he stared at the white cardstock lying near the baseboard. Mara knelt down, her hands shaking so violently she could barely grasp the edges of the heavy paper. The handwriting was messy, aggressive, and rushed, scrawled with a thick black permanent marker that bled through the reverse side.

“You forgot the exchange package in the lining. Return it by midnight or the children don't see tomorrow's sunrise.”

Mara let out a sharp gasp, dropping the paper as if it had suddenly burst into burning flames.

"Exchange package?" she whispered, staring blankly at the words while her mind raced back through the frantic blur of the past forty-eight hours.

"I didn't take anything from the office. I swear to God, I just grabbed my kids and ran."

"Lies don't keep people alive, Mara," Clara snapped, standing up with a stiffness in her joints that betrayed her age.

"Someone gave you that car seat, or someone swapped it while you weren't looking. Now we need to check every single inch of it before whoever wrote that note kicks this door in."

Before Mara could protest, a soft, mechanical click echoed from inside the infant carrier.
