Chapter 6 - Darkness and the Front Window

The sudden plunge into darkness brought an instantaneous, suffocating hush over the household. The only illumination came from the pulsing red LED light glowing faintly from inside the hidden compartment of the car seat on the floor. Maya let out a sharp cry of fright and buried her face against Clara's orange sweater. Clara wrapped her free arm tightly around the little girl, while keeping the heavy cast-iron skillet raised in her right hand, ready to strike at a moment's notice.
"Stay down, everyone," Clara hissed, her voice cutting through the silence with absolute authority.
"Leo, grab your sister's hand and crawl under the console table right now. Don't make a single sound."
Mara scrambled in the dark, her hands sweeping across the hardwood floor until she touched Leo's shoulder, guiding both children safely beneath the heavy wooden furniture. She pulled the car seat with her, shielding the blinking metallic drive from the front windows with her own body. Outside, the crunch of heavy footsteps on the gravel driveway grew louder, moving deliberately toward the front porch.
"Clara, the breaker box," Mara whispered, her lips brushing against the older woman's ear.
"Is there a switch inside the pantry?"
"It’s outside on the side wall," Clara murmured back, her breathing controlled and steady.
"And whoever is walking out there knows exactly where it is. They just cut the main power line from the meter box."
A heavy, deliberate thud shook the front porch, followed by the sound of glass shattering near the bottom panel of the front door. A gloved hand reached through the broken opening, feeling blindly along the interior frame for the deadbolt latch. Clara didn't hesitate; she raised the cast-iron skillet high above her head and brought it down toward the shattered opening with terrifying force.
A muffled groan echoed from the porch, followed by the clatter of a heavy metal tool dropping onto the concrete step.
"You missed the artery, old woman," a raspy, distorted voice snarled through the broken glass.
May you like
"But you've only got about five minutes before the rest of my crew arrives to burn this place to the ground."
