Chapter 7 - The Voice at the Breach

The raspy voice hung in the dark hallway like poison gas, heavy and suffocating. Mara held her breath, pressing her hand tightly over Leo’s mouth to stop him from letting out a whimper. Clara lowered the cast-iron skillet slightly, her chest heaving as she stared down through the jagged hole in the door where the intruder's gloved fingers had just been fumbling.
"You picked the wrong house and the wrong family," Clara called back, her voice ringing out with a fierce, unwavering strength that defied her years.
"My grandfather built these walls with hardwood and steel reinforced framing. You aren't getting in here without a tank."
"We don't need a tank, Mrs. Henderson," the voice replied, sounding chillingly close, as if the man was pressing his mouth directly against the shattered wood.
"We just need the encryption key sitting in that blue baby carrier on your floor. Give us the drive, and we walk away. Refuse, and nobody in that house lives to see tomorrow."
Mara glanced down at the dark gray metallic drive, its red LED light blinking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.
"What is on that thing?" Mara whispered to the darkness, her voice shaking with terror and confusion.
"Why are they willing to burn a house down for a pocket drive?"
"It doesn't matter what's on it right now," Clara whispered back fiercely, grabbing Mara’s wrist in a bruising grip.
"What matters is that they followed you here because they know you have it. That means your phone, your car, everything you own is being tracked by GPS."
"My phone," Mara gasped, her eyes widening in the dim red glow.
"I left it in the cup holder of the sedan when we got out."
"Then it's already compromised," Clara said, releasing her grip and creeping slowly toward the kitchen archway.
"Listen to me, Mara. We aren't giving them a damn thing. We're going out through the root cellar in the back pantry. Leo, Maya, follow the baseboard to my voice."

Before anyone could move toward the kitchen, the sound of heavy boots kicking the side wall of the house echoed through the living room.
