Chapter 12 - The Cry in the Woods

The sound wasn't a whimper or a sigh; it was a sharp, full-throated infant cry that pierced the quiet darkness of the pine forest like a siren. Mara froze instantly, her blood running cold as she stared down at the blue-swaddled carrier resting on the damp earth. The red LED light on the hidden drive blinked faster, as if the audio trigger had activated a secondary circuit inside the metallic unit.
"Mom, is the baby waking up?" Maya whispered, her tear-stained face looking up through the gloom with innocent confusion.
"She's been sleeping the whole time."
"Shh, baby, shh," Mara murmured frantically, pressing her hands over the edges of the carrier while trying desperately to quiet the infant.
"Keep your voice down, Maya, please."
Mara reached down and fumbled with the plastic buckle of the heavy winter blanket swaddling the child, pulling the fabric back to check the baby's face in the dim red glow. Her breath caught in her throat, and a cold wave of absolute horror washed over her entire body.
There was no baby under the blanket.
Instead, resting inside the molded plastic contours of the car seat was a heavy, second metallic drive identical to the first one, wired directly into a small digital speaker that was currently broadcasting a pre-recorded loop of infant crying sounds.
"It's a trap," Mara whispered aloud to the empty forest, her mind spinning wildly as the terrifying realization finally settled into place.
"The whole thing was a setup from the very beginning."
Before she could process the implications, a low, mechanical whirring sound emanated from the metallic drive in her hands, followed by a synthesized female voice speaking in the dark.

A red laser dot suddenly flickered against the trunk of the oak tree three feet directly above Mara's head.
