Chapter 13 - The Laser Dot

The crimson laser dot burned steadily against the dark bark of the oak tree, casting a tiny, ominous circle right where Mara’s head had been a second earlier. Leo grabbed Mara’s arm with both hands, his eyes wide with a terror that transcended his eight years of age. Maya whimpered softly, burying her face once more in the fabric of her denim jacket as the mechanical whirring of the metallic drive fell silent in the crisp night air.

"Mom, what is that red light?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely articulate the words.

Mara didn't answer. She slowly set the modified car seat down onto the pine needles, her movements deliberate and restrained, exactly as they had been taught during long-forgotten training sessions that her mind had spent years trying to bury. The memory surged back in a blinding rush—the secure facilities, the encrypted comms, the sudden betrayal by her own agency three years ago, and the quiet suburban life she had fabricated to hide her children from the men who were currently standing fifty yards away in the dark.

"Listen to me very carefully," Mara said, looking down into her son's terrified eyes with absolute, unshakeable calm.

"Take your sister and run straight down that drainage culvert toward the highway motel. Do not stop for anything, do you understand me?"

"Where are you going?" Leo cried out, his voice cracking with panic.

"We aren't leaving you here!"

"I am the package they want," Mara said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her son's forehead with a steady hand.

"And I am going to make sure they collect me instead of my children."

From the shadows of the pine trees ahead, a slow, rhythmic clapping sound began to echo through the stillness of the forest. A tall man stepped out from behind a thick cluster of evergreens, his face half-obscured by the deep hood of a tactical jacket, holding a silenced pistol loosely at his side.

"Touching family reunion, Agent Henderson," the man said, his voice smooth, cold, and entirely devoid of human warmth.
