Chapter 5 - The Hidden Compartment

The tiny mechanical click sounded like a gunshot in the quiet hallway. Mara dropped to her knees beside the infant car seat, her hands hovering tentatively over the edges of the blue blanket. Leo and Maya crowded close, their small faces reflecting pure confusion and fear under the harsh overhead light. Clara stood directly behind them, holding a heavy cast-iron skillet she had snatched from the kitchen counter just moments before.
"Step back, both of you," Clara instructed the children, her voice firm and uncompromising as she positioned herself over Mara's shoulder.
"Mara, peel that lining back right now. No hesitation."
Mara grabbed the edge of the plush synthetic fabric lining the interior walls of the car seat and yanked hard. The Velcro ripped away with a harsh, tearing sound, exposing a heavy plastic backing panel that didn't belong in standard baby gear. Running her fingers along the molded seam, Mara found a small latch and pressed it downward. The panel popped open with a spring-loaded snap, revealing a hollow compartment carved directly into the high-density foam base.
Inside the hidden space sat a sleek, dark gray metallic drive about the size of a deck of cards, blinking with a steady, pulsing red LED light. Resting right beside it was a heavy gold signet ring engraved with an intricate, unfamiliar family crest.
"What is that?" Maya asked, pointing a small finger at the blinking light while tilting her head in innocent curiosity.
"Is that Mom's special computer thing?"
"No," Mara whispered, her voice barely audible as a cold sweat broke out across her forehead.
"I've never seen this drive in my life. I bought this car seat second-hand off an online marketplace three days ago in the parking lot of a grocery store."
"An online marketplace?" Clara groaned, pressing the palm of her hand against her forehead in sheer disbelief.
"You bought safety equipment for your children from a stranger on the internet without checking it first?"
"The seller said it was brand new, never used!" Mara cried out, her restraint finally cracking as hot tears spilled over her eyelashes.
"We didn't have the money for a proper one after I lost my job at the firm. I was just trying to keep them safe on the road!"

Suddenly, the overhead lights throughout the entire house flickered violently twice and then went completely black, plunging the hallway into absolute darkness.
