The sharp pine needles crunched softly beneath Mara's boots as she plunged deeper into the dense forest, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. The moonlight barely penetrated the thick canopy of evergreen branches, casting eerie, shifting patterns across the uneven forest floor. Leo held tightly to the back of Mara's puffer jacket with one hand, while using his other hand to guide his weeping sister through a thicket of low-hanging briars.

Far behind them, muffled shouts echoed from the direction of Clara's farmhouse, followed by the sharp, angry bark of the German Shepherd picking up a fresh scent.

"Keep going, just a little farther," Mara encouraged them, though her own legs felt like lead weights filled with concrete.

Mara clutched the heavy infant car seat against her hip, the blinking red LED light from the hidden compartment casting a faint, rhythmic crimson glow against the dark tree trunks as they passed.

Suddenly, a bright beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight cut through the dark canopy fifty yards to their left, sweeping back and forth across the underbrush like a searchlight.

"Down! Drop to the ground right now!" Mara whispered fiercely, shoving Leo and Maya into a deep depression beneath a fallen, moss-covered oak log.

Mara threw herself over them, pulling the blue-swaddled infant car seat flat against the damp earth. They held their collective breath as the heavy boots of a searcher crunched across the dry pine needles only a short distance away. The beam of light washed over the top of the fallen log, illuminating the rising mist in the cold night air.

"Nothing here," a harsh, metallic voice barked into a shoulder radio.

"Check the creek bed further down. The old lady's house is secured, but the girl couldn't have gone far with those kids."

The footsteps faded away into the distance, replaced only by the rustling wind in the pine branches. Mara let out a slow, shaking exhale, her muscles aching with profound exhaustion.
