Chapter 9 - The Decoy

The rain began to fall in heavy, relentless sheets, drumming a frantic rhythm against the roof of the suburban home as Clara paced the living room floor. Every shadow seemed to stretch and contort into a terrifying shape, whispering echoes of Julian’s voice and Lily’s frightened cries. She held the small pink stuffed rabbit so tightly to her chest that her knuckles ached. Marcus was stationed by the front window, peering through the blinds into the stormy darkness where the flashing red and blue lights of the FBI vehicles had long since faded into a somber, steady amber glow.
“Arthur hasn’t checked in on the secure radio for twenty minutes,” Marcus muttered nervously, tapping his fingers against the window frame.
Clara stopped pacing, her breath catching in her throat. The silence from the outside world felt unnatural, like the breathless calm before a devastating hurricane made landfall.
“Marcus, we can’t just sit here waiting to be hunted. If Julian’s associates took Lily, they’re using her as leverage to force the federal prosecutor to drop the charges against him,” Clara said, her voice steadying with a cold, desperate clarity.
Before Marcus could reply, a sharp, metallic screech echoed from the detached garage at the back of the property, followed by the muffled roar of a high-performance engine revving to life in the driveway.
Both of them froze.
“That’s Arthur’s undercover cruiser,” Marcus whispered, his eyes widening in disbelief. “Why is someone driving off in his car?”
Clara bolted toward the back door that led to the garage, throwing the deadbolt open without a second thought. The cold rain lashed against her face as she stepped out onto the concrete patio, her white wedding gown soaking up the muddy puddles beneath her bare feet.
The garage doors were wide open. Arthur Vance’s unmarked cruiser was gone, leaving behind only the smoking residue of rubber burning against the wet asphalt. But slumped against the side of a rusted lawnmower inside the dimly lit garage was a figure in a dark trench coat, bound and gagged with industrial duct tape.
Clara rushed forward, ripping the tape away from Arthur’s mouth while Marcus frantically untied his wrists from behind his back.

“It was a decoy,” Arthur gasped, coughing violently as he spat out a mouthful of rain and dust. “They used me to secure the escape route. Julian’s second-in-command just took the girl to the airstrip outside the county line.”
