Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Nursery

The damp autumn air whipped against Clara’s bare shoulders as she stood on the curb outside the reception hall, clutching Lily tight against her chest. The pink party dress, usually a symbol of innocent celebration, now felt like a stark reminder of a ruined life. She pressed the screen of her phone, staring at the photograph until her vision blurred with hot, angry tears. Julian’s cold, calculating expression in the digital image bore no resemblance to the charming man she had dated for two years. He had systematically groomed her, building a fortress of affection while weaving a web of isolation around her and her daughter.
A sleek black town car pulled up beside her, its hazard lights blinking rhythmically against the asphalt. The rear door swung open, revealing the worried face of Marcus, her longtime attorney and childhood friend.
“Clara, get in. I saw the commotion inside. What in God’s name happened?” Marcus asked, his voice laced with urgent concern as he reached out to help her into the leather-trimmed interior.
Clara slid across the seat, adjusting Lily, who had quieted down into exhausted, rhythmic sniffling against her collarbone.
“Julian threatened her. He hit her, Marcus. And right after I told him it was over, I got this,” Clara said, shoving the phone into his hands with a trembling finger.
Marcus stared at the display, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He looked up, his eyes dark with sudden realization.
“This isn't an isolated incident, Clara. Julian transferred ownership of your townhouse into a shell corporation three days ago. I think he planned this entire wedding as a trap to secure your assets,” Marcus revealed, dropping a heavy manila folder onto the middle console between them.
Clara’s breath hitched in her throat as she looked at the legal documents peeking out of the folder. Julian wasn't just an abusive step-father; he was a calculated financial predator who had infiltrated her life with terrifying precision.
“We’re going straight to my house, and then to the police,” Marcus declared, shifting the car into drive.

Clara nodded, kissing the top of Lily’s curly blonde head, but as they pulled away from the curb, a pair of headlights flickered on from an unmarked sedan parked two cars back, tracking their every move.
