Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Guest

The stranger stepped further into the amber light of the living room, revealing sharp features, piercing grey eyes, and a small jagged scar running along his jawline. Clara instinctively stepped back, placing her body between the intruder and the staircase leading up to Lily’s room. Marcus moved faster, planting himself in front of Clara while pulling a small brass letter opener from the side table.
“Who the hell are you, and how did you get past the security gate?” Marcus demanded, his voice rigid with adrenaline and defensive authority.
The man raised his hands slowly, palms open, indicating he was unarmed, but his gaze remained locked entirely on Clara.
“My name is Detective Inspector Arthur Vance, and I’ve been tracking Julian Montgomery across three states for the past fourteen months. The man you married today isn't just a con artist—he’s part of a high-net-worth matrimonial fraud ring,” the detective said, his voice gravelly and exhausted.
Clara clutched her bare shoulders, the white silk of her wedding dress feeling like a straitjacket.
“You knew? If you’ve been tracking him, why didn’t you stop him before he got to me? Before he laid a hand on my daughter?” Clara demanded, the suppressed fury finally boiling over into a sharp, accusatory cry.
Arthur sighed, pulling a folded stack of glossy surveillance photographs from his coat pocket and tossing them onto the coffee table.
“Because guys like Julian are ghosts, Mrs. Hayes—or whatever name he gave you on the marriage license. He targets successful single mothers, isolates them from their networks, and uses legal loopholes to drain their accounts before vanishing. We needed an overt act of physical abuse or a flagrant breach of contract to freeze his assets federally. Tonight, your daughter provided that catalyst,” Arthur explained, his eyes softening slightly with genuine sympathy.
Marcus leaned over the table, flipping through the photographs, which showed Julian meeting with shady-looking individuals outside various banks and high-end jewelry stores.
“If we have proof of abuse and financial fraud, we can issue a statewide dragnet right now,” Marcus urged, looking between Arthur and Clara for validation.
Arthur shook his head slowly, a grim smile touching the corner of his mouth.

“It’s not that simple. Julian anticipated this exact scenario. While you were driving here, his legal team filed an emergency custody injunction claiming Clara is an unstable, erratic bride who staged an incident to alienate him from his stepdaughter,” Arthur revealed, pulling out a freshly printed court summons.
