Chapter 8 - The Empty Bed

The breath left Clara’s lungs in a violent, silent gasp as she stared at the empty, rumpled sheets. The room was freezing, the autumn wind billowing the sheer white curtains outward into the quiet space. Lily was gone. The terrifying realization hit Clara like a physical blow, sending her stumbling forward to grab the iron bedpost for support.

“No, no, no,” Clara choked out, her hands shaking violently as she frantically pulled back the pillows, half-expecting her three-year-old daughter to be playing a frightening game of hide-and-seek.

Footsteps pounded up the carpeted stairs, and Marcus burst into the room, breathless and pale, followed closely by Detective Arthur Vance.

“Clara, what is it? I saw you run upstairs—holy hell,” Marcus stopped short, his eyes locking onto the empty bed and the wide-open window.

Arthur didn't hesitate. He crossed the room in two long strides, leaning out the window to inspect the trellis and the muddy flower beds directly below. He pulled a small flashlight from his pocket, sweeping the beam across the damp soil.

“Footprints. Two sets. One adult, one small child’s shoes,” Arthur muttered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, tactical register.

Clara spun around, her face pale as death, her bridal gown stained with mud and tears.

“You said he was alone! You said Julian was contained!” Clara screamed, her voice cracking with the unbearable agony of a mother whose child had been stolen right out from under the noses of federal agents.

Arthur turned back from the window, his expression grim and hard as flint.

“Julian operated as part of a syndicate. We underestimated their reach. He must have had a secondary operative planted on the property while we were distracted by the arrest downstairs,” Arthur explained, drawing his service pistol and checking the magazine slide with a sharp click.

Marcus gripped the back of a wooden chair, his knuckles turning stark white.

“How is that possible? My security system covers every perimeter angle of this house!” Marcus argued angrily.

“It covers electronic entry points, Marcus. It doesn’t cover local insiders who know how to bypass manual locks,” Arthur replied, already heading toward the bedroom door.

He stopped, turning back to Clara, who was clutching a pink stuffed rabbit left abandoned on the floor near the window.

“Stay here, lock the door behind us, and do not open it for anyone except me or Marcus,” Arthur ordered, before sprinting down the stairs into the night.
