Chapter 7 - The Federal Sweep

The flashing red and blue strobes painted the living room walls in frantic, surreal patterns as federal agents in tactical gear swarmed the front porch. The two county deputies froze, their hands hovering instinctively over their service weapons before slowly raising them away from their holsters as they recognized the silver FBI badges surrounding them.
Julian’s triumphant smirk vanished in a single heartbeat, replaced by a mask of sheer panic as he looked past Arthur Vance to the federal agents blocking his exit to the street.
“This is a mistake! I have a valid family court order signed by Judge Henderson! You have no jurisdiction over a civil custody dispute!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with unmasked desperation as two agents grabbed his arms and forced him against the exterior wall.
Arthur stepped forward, slipping a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists with practiced efficiency.
“Judge Henderson is currently being subpoenaed down at the federal courthouse for taking bribes from your offshore accounts, Julian. Your civil leverage just went up in smoke,” Arthur replied smoothly, patting Julian down and retrieving a burner phone from his tuxedo jacket pocket.
Clara stood in the doorway, the heavy silk of her wedding dress brushing against the frame, watching the man who had terrorized her life being led away in disgrace. The nightmare was ending, but the psychological toll lingered in the tight knot in her chest.
Marcus stepped out beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder as they watched the squad car doors slam shut behind Julian.
“It’s over, Clara. He’s going away for a very long time, and your assets are already being frozen for restitution,” Marcus murmured softly.
Clara nodded, a profound sense of relief washing over her, but her thoughts immediately turned upward toward the second floor where Lily was still sleeping. She turned away from the commotion on the porch, walking briskly up the stairs to check on her daughter. The house was quiet now, save for the hum of the refrigerator downstairs and the distant crackle of a police radio.

She pushed the door to the guest bedroom open gently, expecting to see the peaceful swell of the quilted blanket beneath which Lily had fallen asleep. Instead, the bed was completely empty, the sheets tossed back in a chaotic tangle, and the window overlooking the backyard was wide open to the freezing autumn wind.
