Chapter 6 - The Knock at Midnight

The grandfather clock in the corner of the living room struck midnight, its deep, resonant chimes echoing through the tense silence of the house like funeral bells. Clara stood frozen by the staircase, her white silk wedding gown dragging slightly on the hardwood floor as the headlights of two distinct vehicles swept across the front windows, casting long, writhing shadows against the cream-colored walls.

Marcus moved quickly to the front door, peering through the peephole while keeping his body angled away from the glass.

“It’s Julian. He’s here. And he’s brought two county sheriff’s deputies with him,” Marcus whispered back over his shoulder, his hand hovering over the deadbolt lock.

Arthur Vance didn't flinch. He drew a small, matte-black tablet from his coat and began tapping furiously on the screen, routing a secure live feed from a hidden camera he had installed across the street earlier that evening.

“Don't open the door yet, Marcus. Let them knock. We need them to commit to the fraudulent service on camera before we spring our counter-trap,” Arthur instructed, his tone ice-cold and professional.

A heavy, authoritative pounding echoed against the thick oak front door, rattling the decorative wreath that still bore the remnants of a congratulatory wedding ribbon.

“Open up! County Sheriff’s Department! We have a court-mandated order for the immediate surrender of the minor child, Lily Hayes!” a gruff voice called out from the porch.

Clara felt a hot tear slip down her cheek, but her fear was rapidly crystallizing into a cold, lethal resolve. She walked past Marcus, her posture straightening as she approached the heavy wooden barrier separating her from the man who had terrorized her daughter.

“You’re not taking my baby,” Clara said softly, her voice carrying a quiet strength that made both men look at her with newfound respect.

She reached out, grabbing the deadbolt, and twisted it sharply. As the door swung open, the harsh glare of the deputies' flashlights cut through the darkness, illuminating Julian Montgomery standing between them in his tuxedo, wearing a sickeningly triumphant smile.

“Good evening, darling. Don’t make this harder on yourself or the child,” Julian said smoothly, stepping forward with the deputies right behind him.

But before Julian could cross the threshold, Arthur stepped out from the shadows beside Clara, holding up a small federal badge that reflected the porch light like a mirror.

“Step back, Julian. You’re under federal arrest for interstate wire fraud, extortion, and impersonation of a federal officer,” Arthur stated loudly, while the street behind them suddenly lit up with the flashing red and blue lights of three unmarked FBI vehicles converging on the driveway.
