Chapter 10 - The Abandoned Airstrip

The unmarked cruiser bounced violently over the unpaved, gravel-strewn access road leading toward the disused municipal airstrip on the edge of the county. Rain sheeted across the windshield faster than the wipers could clear it, turning the landscape into a blurry nightmare of grey and black. In the passenger seat, Arthur Vance reloaded his Glock with practiced, frantic movements, while Marcus gripped the steering wheel so hard his forearms trembled. In the back seat sat Clara, her sodden wedding dress ruined beyond recognition, her eyes fixed like laser beams on the chain-link perimeter fence looming ahead.
Through the pouring rain, the dim amber runway lights cut sickly paths through the fog, illuminating a sleek twin-engine private jet idling near the rusted hangar doors.
“That’s their bird. Tail number matches the offshore shell corporation Julian used to buy his fake passport,” Arthur shouted over the deafening roar of the jet engines spooling up for takeoff.
Marcus slammed on the brakes, sending the cruiser into a controlled slide that came to a violent halt thirty yards from the tarmac, directly blocking the path to the runway.
“Cut the engine and stay in the car, Clara!” Arthur ordered, flinging his door open and drawing his weapon as he sprinted into the blinding rain toward the aircraft.
Clara ignored the command entirely. She shoved her door open, hitting the wet gravel running. Her bare feet screamed in protest against the sharp stones, but adrenaline completely numbed the pain. She watched in sheer horror as a tall, broad-shouldered man in a pilot’s uniform dragged a crying, kicking little girl in a wet pink dress up the aluminum boarding stairs of the jet.
“Lily!” Clara screamed, her voice tearing raw against the deafening whine of the turbine engines.
The man stopped on the top step, turning back to look at her with a chilling, sadistic grin. He held a small, dark remote control in his gloved hand, pressing a button that caused the heavy steel boarding stairs to begin retracting upward into the fuselage.

Arthur raised his pistol, sprinting across the tarmac, but he was still twenty yards away when a blinding flash of light erupted from the treeline to their left, followed by the deafening crack of a high-powered rifle shot that shattered the cruiser’s windshield into a million glittering fragments.
