Chapter 9 - Into the Ashes

The heavy attic door swung fully open, creaking on rusted hinges that sounded like a dying gasp. The darkness inside was absolute, swallowing the beam of Julian’s flashlight as if the light were being devoured by a physical entity. The freezing wind howling from the open doorway whipped Marisa’s hair across her face, carrying with it that sickening, suffocating odor of burnt wood and sweet, suffocating lavender.
"Stay back," Julian ordered, his voice tight as he instinctively reached behind his back, his fingers curling around the handle of his hidden knife. Despite his authoritative tone, a fine sheen of sweat glistened across his forehead.
"We can't just stand here, Julian," Marisa said, her voice trembling but resolute. "Valentina is downstairs in the nursery. If whatever is in this room targets the child..."
Without finishing her sentence, Marisa stepped past him, grabbing the kerosene lantern tighter as she peered into the black abyss of the attic. The lantern’s dancing flame flickered wildly, casting long, writhing shadows against the exposed wooden beams of the vaulted ceiling.
Julian cursed under his breath and stepped in after her, sweeping his high-powered flashlight across the expansive space. The beam cut through the swirling dust motes, illuminating rows of covered furniture, broken mirrors, and stacks of old wooden crates.
"Clara?" Julian called out, his voice cracking slightly on the name. It was the first time Marisa had ever heard the powerful, unyielding master of the Blackwood estate sound genuinely afraid. "Clara, if this is some sick game—"
A soft laugh echoed from the far corner of the attic, near a charred, soot-blackened brick fireplace that had clearly suffered the brunt of the old fire. It sounded light, melodic, and chillingly familiar.
Arthur remained standing in the doorway outside, refusing to cross the threshold. "Don't go near the hearth, Master Julian," the old man warned, his voice shaking. "That's where the floorboards are thinnest. That's where she fell."
Julian ignored the warning, marching toward the corner with heavy, purposeful strides. The flashlight beam swept across a stack of old wedding trunks, illuminating a horrifying sight that made him stop dead in his tracks.
Draped over the back of an antique velvet chair was a white wedding veil. But it was not pristine. The edges were charred black, crumbling into gray ash at the slightest touch, and the delicate silk fabric was stained with dark, dried crimson spots that looked uncomfortably like old blood.
Marisa covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes widening in horror as she stepped closer to Julian's shoulder. "Julian... look at the floor."

In front of the charred fireplace, small, muddy footprints made by a child's small shoes led directly from the open window toward the center of the room. And sitting neatly in the middle of those footprints was Valentina’s stuffed toy rabbit, its plush head turned completely backward.
