Chapter 11 - The Serpent's Nest

The dark, gaping maw of the ventilation shaft smelled intensely of damp metal, dust, and the lingering, sickly-sweet scent of lavender perfume. Julian didn't hesitate. He pulled a small tactical flashlight from his pocket, clicked it on, and shoved his upper body directly into the narrow metal tunnel.

"Julian, you won't fit!" Marisa cried out, stepping closer to the desk. "It's a labyrinth of old ductwork built in the nineteenth century! You could get stuck!"

"I don't care," Julian's muffled voice echoed back from inside the shaft. "Valentina is in here. If someone thinks they can take a Blackwood from this estate, they are going to learn why this family survived every scandal for a century."

His shoulders scraped against the rusted sides of the metal pipe as he pulled himself forward, shining his flashlight ahead. The beam cut through the darkness, illuminating twisting corridors of galvanized steel that branched off into different wings of the mansion.

About twenty feet ahead, the beam caught a flash of black-and-white fabric.

"Valentina!" Julian called out sharply, his voice echoing metallic and distorted through the pipes.

A soft, whimpering sob drifted back down the shaft, followed by a tiny voice: "Daddy? Help me... the lady with the veil is taking me to the basement."

Julian pushed forward with a surge of adrenaline, his knuckles scraping raw against the sharp rivets of the metal walls. He rounded a tight corner where the ductwork descended vertically toward the lower levels of the estate—straight down toward the old wine cellar and the sealed brick foundations beneath the grand foyer.

Above him in the nursery, Marisa paced frantically beside the open vent, straining her ears to catch any sound of their progress. Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed outside the nursery door in the hallway.

Marisa spun around, her heart leaping into her throat as she expected Eleanor or Arthur. Instead, the door pushed open to reveal Eleanor herself, standing there in her ruined white wedding gown, her blonde hair tangled and her eyes bloodshot, holding a heavy silver candlestick like a club.

"Where is he?" Eleanor hissed, her voice vibrating with hysterical rage. "Where is Julian? I heard him shouting in here! Is he looking for that bastard child?"

"Valentina has been taken, Eleanor," Marisa said coldly, stepping between the deranged bride and the open air vent. "Put the candlestick down. Someone is inside the estate, and based on the letters we've received tonight, they're coming for all of us."

Eleanor let out a harsh, unstable laugh, her eyes darting frantically around the empty room. "Taken? No, Marisa... nobody took her. Julian set this up from the beginning. That child is his leverage to keep me trapped in this gothic nightmare forever."
