Chapter 14 - Rising Tides

A low, vibrating rumble shook the foundation of the Blackwood estate, vibrating straight up through the stone floor of the crypt. From deep within the drainage grates along the base of the walls, a torrent of icy, dark water burst forth, churning violently as it flooded the chamber.
"No! Clara, stop it!" Julian screamed, throwing his entire weight against the locked iron gate. The metal bit deep into his palms, but the heavy padlock didn't yield a fraction of an inch.
Inside the vault, Valentina screamed as the frigid water rushed over her shoes, soaking the hem of her black-and-white dress. She dropped her stuffed toy rabbit into the rising current, watching helplessly as it floated away toward the back of the dark chamber.
"Daddy! The water is cold! I'm scared!" Valentina cried out, pressing her small hands against the iron bars.
Julian gritted his teeth, a desperate adrenaline surging through his veins. He pulled his heavy metal pocket knife out, jamming the blade into the narrow gap of the keyhole, twisting it with raw, brutal force until the steel snapped in half inside the mechanism. The lock remained hopelessly sealed.
Above them, through the vertical ventilation shaft that led back up to the manor, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed down.
"Julian! Can you hear me down there?" Marisa’s voice shouted frantically from the top of the shaft, followed immediately by the sound of Eleanor’s hysterical screaming in the background.
"Marisa! Listen to me!" Julian yelled upward, his voice cracking with panic. "Go to the estate office! In the floor safe behind the grandfather clock—there is a master bypass key for every vault in this foundation! Hurry, we only have minutes!"
"I'm on my way!" Marisa's voice faded as she sprinted away down the hallway.
Julian turned back to the gate. The water was already knee-high inside the vault, swirling dangerously around Clara and the little girl. Clara stood motionless in the center of the rising lake, her ash-stained white wedding veil floating on the surface like a shroud. She made no move to escape, staring at Julian with an eerie, transcendent calm.
"You can't save us both, Julian," Clara called out over the roar of the rushing water. "You have to choose. Do you save the legacy, or do you save the bloodline?"

Julian stared across the water, his chest heaving as the freezing tide lapped against his own waist outside the gate. The terrifying truth of his entire life—the lies, the murders, the locked doors, and the toxic ambitions that built the Blackwood empire—finally closed around his throat.
