Chapter 2 - The Weight of Gold

Julian Blackwood’s fingers turned the heavy golden band over in his palm. The polished metal caught the fractured light of the chandelier, casting a cold, amber glint across the blood-red marble of the foyer. To anyone else, it was merely an expensive piece of jewelry dropped during a moment of domestic chaos. To Julian, the inscribed initials along the inner rim carried the absolute weight of a legacy he had spent a decade trying to bury.

Eleanor stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the stone like falling glass. The silk of her wedding gown hissed with every micro-movement of her tense muscles. Her eyes darted from Julian’s resolute expression down to the trembling small frame of seven-year-old Valentina, who still buried her tear-stained face into Marisa’s black-and-white apron.

"You cannot possibly be serious, Julian," Eleanor whispered, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that carried far more menace than her earlier screams. "We made an agreement before God, before the guests, and before every major financial institution in this city. That girl—and her mother's shadow—do not belong in our future."

Julian did not look up immediately. He slowly closed his fist around the ring, feeling the sharp edge bite into his palm. When he finally raised his gaze, the warmth had entirely drained from his dark eyes, leaving behind the hardened gaze of a man who held absolute financial and legal power over everyone standing beneath his roof.

"The agreement, Eleanor, was that you would become Mrs. Blackwood and share my life," Julian said, his voice level and entirely devoid of emotion. "It was never written that I would cast away my own blood to appease your fragile social anxieties."

Marisa tightened her protective grip around Valentina’s shoulders, her breath hitching in her throat. She had served the Blackwood family through decades of whispered scandals, sudden deaths, and generational trauma, but she had never seen Julian look at a newly wedded bride with such utter detachment.

"Mr. Blackwood, please," Marisa choked out, her voice trembling as she addressed him. "We can pack our bags tonight. We don't need to cause a scene on your wedding night. Just let us go to the carriage house until dawn."

"You are going nowhere, Marisa," Julian commanded, stepping closer to them. He ignored Eleanor entirely, a calculated slight that made the blonde bride’s jaw clench until her teeth ached. "Valentina is a Blackwood. And it is time she lived inside the manor where she belongs, not hidden away in the servants' quarters like a dirty secret."

Eleanor let out a sharp, incredulous laugh that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings. She reached out, her manicured fingers gripping Julian’s dark lapel with desperate force.

"If that brat stays in this house," Eleanor hissed, leaning in close so her breath brushed his ear, "I will make sure every headline tomorrow morning exposes the exact reason why her biological mother isn't here to claim her."

Julian slowly peeled Eleanor’s fingers away from his suit, one by one, with terrifying calm. He leaned down slightly, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that only she could hear.

"Try it, Eleanor," Julian murmured, his eyes flashing with a dark, hidden threat. "And you’ll find out why the police never found your first husband's body."
