Chapter 15 - The Ash and the Crown

The freezing water surged to chest-height inside the vault, the dark surface swirling with debris and bubbles as the underground lake swallowed the catacombs. Valentina was forced up onto a raised stone sarcophagus, sobbing hysterically as she clutched the cold iron bars of the gate.

"Daddy! Please!" the little girl screamed, her small fingers slipping against the wet metal.

Julian slammed his shoulder against the iron door one last time, the impact sending a searing pain shooting through his collarbone. He was bleeding, exhausted, and entirely out of options. The heavy brass bypass key clattered against the stone floor just behind him as Marisa dropped it from the top of the stairwell, having sprinted down with desperate speed.

Julian snatched the key from the water, shoved it into the padlock, and turned it with a sharp, resounding click.

The heavy iron gate swung open.

Without a second thought, Julian plunged into the freezing water, wading through the chest-deep current toward the sarcophagus. He scooped Valentina up into his arms, hoisting her securely over his shoulder just as the water level reached the top of the stone pillars.

"Hold on to me, sweetheart! Don't let go!" Julian gasped, turning back toward the exit.

He looked across the flooded vault toward Clara. She hadn't moved an inch. The water had risen to her chest, soaking her ash-stained white wedding veil until it sank beneath the surface like a heavy anchor. She smiled at him—a final, haunting look of closure—before slipping beneath the dark water without a single struggle.

"Clara!" Julian shouted instinctively, taking a half-step back toward her, before the crushing weight of reality and the safety of his daughter pulled him forward.

He splashed through the rushing current, carrying Valentina out through the crypt doors and up the stone steps just as Marisa reached down to pull them both over the threshold.

They collapsed onto the dry flagstones of the upper hallway, coughing and shivering violently. Valentina buried her face into Marisa’s black-and-white apron, crying softly as Marisa wrapped a thick wool blanket around her shivering shoulders.

Julian lay flat on his back on the cold stone floor, staring up at the vaulted ceiling of the Blackwood estate. His chest heaved with every ragged breath. The fire was extinguished, the ghosts had claimed their debt, and the grand empire he had killed to protect was now nothing more than a monument of ash and blood.

Footsteps echoed softly from the grand staircase above. Eleanor stood on the landing, looking down at them in the dim morning light. Her wedding dress was ruined, her hair was a mess, and her eyes were completely void of hope. She didn't scream anymore. She simply turned around and walked back into the dark master suite, closing the door behind her without a sound, leaving the Blackwood estate to the silence it had always truly owned.
