Chapter 12 - The Descent to the Crypt

Deep within the subterranean labyrinth beneath the Blackwood estate, the air grew thick, damp, and freezing cold. Julian dropped out of the vertical ventilation shaft, landing heavily on the flagstone floor of the old estate crypt—a forgotten cellar that predated the mansion itself by over a century.
His flashlight beam cut through the thick subterranean fog, illuminating towering stone columns, rows of empty wine racks, and iron-bound oak doors leading deeper into the family catacombs. The smell of burning ash and lavender was suffocating down here, mixed with the earthy stench of wet stone and ancient decay.
"Valentina!" Julian shouted, his boots splashing through puddles of standing water as he sprinted down the central stone aisle.
"Daddy!" a small voice cried out from the darkness ahead.
Julian rounded a massive stone pillar and stopped abruptly. Standing near the open iron gate of a private family vault was a tall, slender figure draped in a tattered, ash-stained white wedding veil that dragged across the damp floor like a shroud of snow.
Clutched tightly against the figure's side was little Valentina, her eyes wide with terror as she clung to her stuffed rabbit.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He raised his flashlight, throwing the beam directly onto the woman's face.
The hood of the veil fell back. Revealed in the harsh white light was a face identical to Eleanor’s, yet infinitely more haunting. Her pale skin was flawless, her long wavy blonde hair framed sharp, aristocratic cheekbones, and her piercing blue eyes stared back at Julian with a mixture of profound heartbreak and psychotic malice.
"Clara?" Julian whispered, his voice dropping to an absolute whisper of disbelief. "No... no, that's impossible. You died in the fire. I identified your body myself."
The woman smiled—a slow, chilling curve of her lips that didn't reach her dead, glassy eyes. She stepped back into the dark interior of the vault, pulling Valentina with her.
"You identified a skeleton in a burned-out room, Julian," Clara’s voice echoed softly through the stone crypt, sounding like dry leaves scraping across concrete. "You wanted the estate, you wanted the control, and you wanted me gone so you could step into high society without my family's shadow hanging over you."
"That's a lie!" Julian yelled, taking a step forward, his hand tightening around the handle of his hidden knife. "You staged the fire to fake your own death and extort my father's estate!"

"And yet, here I am," Clara whispered, her grip tightening around Valentina's arm just enough to make the little girl whimper. "And now, my sweet husband... it’s time for you to pay the ultimate price for our wedding night."
