Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Gallery

The heavy oak doors of the master suite clicked shut, sealing Eleanor inside a room that smelled faintly of expensive lavender and suffocating dread. She paced the length of the Persian rug, her wedding gown rustling like dry autumn leaves. Julian’s words echoed relentlessly in her mind, a chilling reminder that the man she had legally bound herself to was not merely a wealthy heir, but a predator who wore tailored suits and polite smiles for public consumption.
Outside in the dimly lit upstairs gallery, Marisa guided Valentina down the long corridor toward the west wing guest rooms. The little girl clutched her stuffed toy rabbit so tightly its frayed seams threatened to split. Every shadow cast by the antique wall sconces seemed to stretch and twist into monstrous shapes.
"Are we safe here, Marisa?" Valentina whispered, her big brown eyes reflecting the dim yellow glow of the wall lamps. "Will the angry lady in the white dress come to find us?"
"No one is going to hurt you, sweetheart," Marisa lied softly, though her own heart hammered frantically against her ribs. She had spent the last four years protecting the child from the venomous whispers of the estate, but tonight felt fundamentally different. Julian’s abrupt declaration had blown the doors off a delicate cage, exposing them to dangers they could no longer outrun.
As they reached the heavy mahogany door of the nursery suite, a floorboard creaked loudly behind them. Marisa spun around, her black skirt swirling defensively as she pulled Valentina behind her skirt.
The corridor was empty. Only a cold draft swept through the hallway, extinguishing the nearest wall sconce with a faint hiss of smoke.
"Who's there?" Marisa called out, her voice echoing down the cavernous hall.
From the darkness of the intersecting hallway, a tall figure stepped into the dim light. It wasn’t Julian, and it wasn’t Eleanor. It was Arthur, the estate’s elderly estate manager, holding a silver tray bearing a single, unopened envelope sealed with dark crimson wax.
"You shouldn't have brought the child back into the main house, Marisa," Arthur murmured, his voice raspy and laden with ancient warning. "Master Julian thinks he can control what he has unleashed, but he forgets the history of these walls."
Marisa narrowed her eyes, stepping forward to shield Valentina completely. "Master Julian gave the order himself, Arthur. If you have an issue with it, take it up with him instead of lurking in the shadows like a ghost."
Arthur offered a grim, humorless smile, his pale eyes gleaming in the candlelight. He extended the silver tray toward her. The envelope bore no return address, only a hand-written name scrawled in jagged, hurried ink that made Marisa’s blood run cold.

"This arrived by special courier five minutes ago," Arthur whispered, his gaze shifting meaningfully down toward the little girl. "It's addressed to Valentina... and it’s from the woman everyone in this house believes has been dead for seven years."
