Chapter 13 - The Bride's Ultimatum

"Let the child go, Clara," Julian commanded, taking another slow, calculated step forward. His boots made a soft squelching sound against the damp flagstones of the crypt floor. "This is between you and me. Valentina has nothing to do with what happened ten years ago."
Clara tilted her head, her long wavy blonde hair sliding over her ash-stained white shoulder like a cascade of toxic silk. Her blue eyes glittered in the harsh beam of Julian's flashlight, reflecting a madness that went far beyond mere revenge.
"Nothing to do with it?" Clara echoed, her voice rising in a sharp, mocking crescendo that bounced off the cold stone walls. "She is the living, breathing proof of your betrayal, Julian! While you were publicly mourning my 'tragic death' to the police and the press, you were hiding my daughter in the servants' quarters, raising her in secret just in case you ever needed a pawn in your grand financial game!"
"I protected her from you!" Julian roared, finally losing his cool as he lunged forward.
Before Julian could cross the distance, Clara whipped a heavy iron key from her pocket and slammed the massive iron gate of the family vault shut between them. The heavy metal bars locked into place with a deafening, metallic clack that echoed like a gunshot through the catacombs.
Valentina burst into tears, pressing her face against the cold iron bars. "Daddy! Help me! The lady is hurting my arm!"
"Valentina!" Julian yelled, grabbing the iron bars with both hands and shaking them with all his might. The ancient metal groaned, but the reinforced lock held firm. He glared through the bars at Clara, his face contorted with rage. "Open this gate right now, Clara, or I swear to God I will tear this crypt apart stone by stone."
Clara stepped back into the shadows of the vault, her ash-stained wedding veil trailing behind her like a river of soot. She offered a slow, chilling smile.
"You want your daughter back, Julian?" Clara asked softly, her voice carrying a lethal finality. "Then you have to make a choice. Just like you made a choice seven years ago when you locked me inside the burning west wing."
From the darkness behind her, Clara pulled out a heavy, rusted iron lever set directly into the stone wall of the vault.
"What are you doing?" Julian demanded, his heart hammering against his ribs as he realized what the lever controlled.
"This crypt was built with only one exit, Julian," Clara whispered, her hand resting firmly on the iron handle. "And right now, the drainage valves are open. The storm outside is flooding the lower levels. In less than ten minutes, this entire room will be filled with freezing water from the estate lake."

Before Julian could lunge at the bars again, Clara pulled the lever down with a sharp, echoing metallic snap.
