Chapter 7 - Descent into the Sub-Basement

The splintered wooden panel gave way with a sharp crack, revealing the dark, echoing interior of the utility shaft. Cool, damp air rushed up from the depths, carrying the faint scent of industrial detergent and old concrete.

“Go, Victoria! I’ll cover the rear,” Daniel urged, gripping the wooden coat rack tighter as another violent blow rattled the cloakroom door, splintering the frame around the deadbolt.

Victoria didn't hesitate. She scrambled through the narrow opening, her white slip tearing slightly against a protruding nail, and slid feet-first down into the vertical drop. A second later, the cloakroom door gave way with a deafening crash. The heavy wood splintered inward, and a tall, broad-shouldered man in a tactical vest stepped through the dust. He held a suppressed pistol aimed squarely at Daniel’s chest.

“End of the line, Mr. Sterling,” the intruder growled, stepping forward with lethal precision.

Daniel didn't flinch. With a surge of adrenaline, he hurled the heavy wooden coat rack directly at the man’s face. The intruder deflected it with a sweep of his forearm, but the momentary distraction was all Daniel needed. He dove headfirst through the utility panel, plunging into the dark chute just as a bullet punched a smoking hole through the wood inches from his ear.

The descent was a breathless blur of friction, metal, and speed. Daniel twisted his body, scraping his elbows against the corrugated interior walls until he hit the bottom with a jarring thud, landing squarely on top of a massive pile of industrial laundry bags.

“Daniel! Over here!” Victoria’s voice hissed from the shadows of the cavernous concrete room.

Daniel scrambled out of the laundry pile, coughing from the floating lint and dust. The sub-basement was a maze of massive silver HVAC ducts, steam pipes, and flickering fluorescent lights that buzzed with a low, agonizing hum. Victoria grabbed his arm, pulling him behind a thick concrete pillar just as heavy boots echoed from the top of the secondary maintenance ladder above them.

“They know we took the chute,” Victoria whispered, her chest heaving as she pressed against the cold concrete.

Daniel wiped a smudge of soot from his forehead, looking down at his ruined tuxedo and bleeding knuckles.

“Where does this tunnel lead?” Daniel asked quietly.

“Straight to the old subway maintenance spur beneath the city,” Victoria replied, pulling the second phone from her pocket. The screen flashed a red warning banner: Perimeter locked. GPS tracking active.

Daniel stared at the warning, a cold dread washing over him.

“They aren't just tracking the phone, Victoria,” Daniel said slowly. “They’re tracking your biometric ID chip.”
