Chapter 14 - The Dawn After the Storm

The first pale rays of early morning sunlight broke through the heavy grey clouds over Manhattan, painting the skyline in shades of bruised gold and amber. The chaotic storm of the previous night had cleared, leaving behind clean, rain-washed streets and the quiet hum of a city waking up to a brand-new day.
Daniel sat on the front steps of his family’s penthouse apartment, still wearing the ruined, mud-splattered black tuxedo jacket over a plain white undershirt. His knuckles were bruised, and exhaustion weighed heavy in his bones, but his mind was remarkably clear.
The front door opened softly, and Sophia stepped out onto the balcony, wearing her white flower girl dress, though the matching bow was gone from her hair. She walked over slowly, clutching the pearl necklace Daniel had given her back in the cloakroom.
“Daddy?” Sophia whispered, her voice small and tentative.
Daniel looked up, smiling softly as he opened his arms. Sophia ran into his embrace, burying her face against his chest just as she had done in the ballroom hours ago.
“Is the bad man gone?” she asked softly.
“Yes, sweetie. He’s gone. He’s never coming back,” Daniel reassured her, kissing the top of her head.
Footsteps echoed softly from the hallway behind them. Daniel looked up to see Victoria standing in the doorway. She had changed out of her ruined lace wedding gown and was now wearing a simple, understated charcoal sweater and black trousers. The heavy makeup and fake persona were completely gone, leaving only the woman beneath the facade.
She stopped a few feet away, her hands clasped nervously in front of her, looking down at the floor before meeting Daniel’s gaze.
“The federal prosecutor just called,” Victoria said quietly, her voice trembling slightly. “Arthur’s entire network has been dismantled. The corporate assets are frozen and returning to your family's control. My contract with them... it’s legally voided.”
Daniel stood up, gently holding Sophia's hand as he stepped closer to Victoria. The air between them was heavy with history, pain, and an unspoken truth that still needed to be addressed.
“Does that mean you’re leaving?” Daniel asked, his voice steady.

Victoria looked up, tears shimmering in her eyes, and took a deep, shuddering breath.
