Chapter 12 - The Second Phone’s Secret
The cold barrel of Henderson’s pistol pressed hard against Victoria’s temple. She didn't flinch, keeping her eyes locked onto Daniel with a fierce, unwavering acceptance. The rain fell harder now, plastering her dark hair against her cheeks and washing the soot from her forehead.
Daniel’s hand trembled inside his pocket. He pulled out the unbranded phone, the screen still dark, and held it out flat on his palm.
“Take it,” Daniel said, his voice tight with suppressed fury. “Take it and let her go.”
Arthur smiled, signaling Henderson with a slight nod. Henderson lowered his weapon from Victoria’s head, stepping forward to snatch the device from Daniel’s palm. The moment the phone left Daniel’s hand, Arthur chuckled softly, pocketing the prize.
“Ple doing business with you, Daniel. Truly. You always were too trusting,” Arthur sneered, turning his back as he walked toward the waiting sedan. “Henderson, clean up the loose ends.”
Henderson raised his pistol once more, aiming squarely at Daniel’s chest.
Victoria let out a piercing scream, lunging forward with all her weight, tipping the wooden chair over and slamming into Henderson’s knees just as he pulled the trigger. The bullet zipped past Daniel’s ear, embedding itself deeply into a wooden shipping crate behind him.
Daniel reacted with explosive speed. He lunged forward, driving his fist hard into Henderson’s jaw. The large man staggered backward, slipping on the wet concrete near the edge of the pier. Before Henderson could recover, Daniel kicked him squarely in the chest, sending him crashing over the edge into the dark, churning waters of the Hudson River below.
Arthur spun around from the car door, his eyes widening in shock as he drew his own backup firearm from his shoulder holster.
“Traitorous bitch!” Arthur roared, aiming his pistol directly at Victoria, who was struggling against her bindings on the wet ground.

Before Arthur could squeeze the trigger, the unbranded phone in his pocket suddenly began to flash with a blinding, strobe-like white light, emitting a high-pitched, deafening electronic shriek.
