Chapter 10 - The Ultimatum at Pier 54

The damp chill of the subway tunnel felt like ice against Daniel’s skin as he stared at the glowing screen. The message was clear, brutal, and left no room for negotiation. Victoria was in their custody, and Arthur Sterling was holding all the cards.
Daniel checked his watch. 11:45 PM. The wedding had begun less than three hours ago, yet his entire world had been thoroughly dismantled and rebuilt as a nightmare. He slipped the encrypted phone back into his pocket, gripped the pearl necklace tightly, and turned away from the dead-end service phone, sprinting toward the rusted maintenance ladder leading up to the street level.
Fifteen minutes later, Daniel burst through a rusted sidewalk grating into the deserted, rain-slicked alleyways of the Manhattan waterfront. A cold drizzle was falling, mixing with the sweat on his face as he ducked into the shadows of the shipping yards. Pier 54 loomed ahead like a skeletal leviathan jutting out into the dark, churning waters of the Hudson River.
The pier was largely abandoned, save for a single black sedan parked near the rusted loading crane at the far end, its hazard lights blinking a slow, rhythmic amber.
Daniel crept forward, keeping low behind stacked shipping containers until he reached the perimeter of the loading bay. Through the mist, he could see two armed guards flanking the open doors of a large storage warehouse. In the center of the concrete platform stood Arthur Sterling, smoking a cigar with casual elegance, flanked by Henderson.
Bound to a wooden chair near the edge of the pier was Victoria. Her white lace wedding gown was stained with mud and soot, her hair tangled around her shoulders, but her chin was held high in defiant silence.
“I knew you’d come, Daniel,” Arthur called out into the open night air, his voice carrying effortlessly over the sound of the lapping river water. “Family loyalty is such a remarkably predictable weakness.”
Daniel stepped out from the shadows into the harsh glare of the warehouse floodlights, his hands raised slightly to show he was unarmed.
“Let her go, Arthur. The encryption keys are backed up on a secure cloud server that automatically deletes if I don't ping it by sunrise. You kill us, and your billion-dollar tech monopoly goes down with us,” Daniel lied smoothly, his voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in his ears.
May you like
Arthur paused, his cigar halfway to his lips, narrowing his eyes as he studied Daniel’s resolute expression.
