Chapter 9 - The Bail Hearing

The morning sun filtered through the frosted glass windows of the municipal courthouse, casting stark geometric patterns across the wooden benches of courtroom number four. Julian sat at the defense table, flanked by a high-priced public defender who looked significantly less confident than his client. Julian’s black suit was rumpled, his white shirt collar unbuttoned, but his expression remained a mask of arrogant composure. He believed his money and corporate connections would buy him a quick dismissal.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open, and a hush fell over the room as Judge Howard ascended to the bench.

“Calling case number 4821, The State versus Julian Vance,” the bailiff announced loudly, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings.

The prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman named ADA Martinez, stood up immediately, adjusting her glasses. “Your Honor, the State moves for the denial of bail based on overwhelming evidence of premeditated conspiracy, financial fraud, and attempted murder by omission, as well as a severe flight risk given the defendant's offshore accounts.”

Julian’s defense attorney quickly rose, waving a dismissive hand. “Your Honor, my client is a pillar of the local tech community. The allegations brought forward by a disgruntled former employee and a hysterical ex-girlfriend are entirely circumstantial—”

“Circumstantial evidence includes high-definition security footage of the defendant swapping lethal chemicals at his own wedding reception, Mr. Hayes,” Judge Howard interrupted coldly, her eyes fixed sharply on Julian.

Before Julian’s lawyer could scramble for a rebuttal, the rear gallery doors pushed open once more. Every head in the courtroom turned as Clara walked down the center aisle. She was no longer wearing the white wedding dress; instead, she wore a sharp, tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, dark sunglasses held in her hand, and an expression of absolute, unyielding frost. She didn't even glance at Julian as she took a seat in the front row directly behind the prosecution table.

Julian froze. For the first time since the handcuffs had been slapped on his wrists, real panic flickered behind his dark eyes.
