Chapter 12 - The Third Player

Julian stared at Evelyn through the cold steel bars, his mind racing to connect the pieces of a puzzle that was rapidly fracturing beyond his control. A third person? Throughout the entire planning phase of the trust fund acquisition, it had only been the two of them—himself and Evelyn, manipulating Clara from the shadows. Or so he had believed.

“What third person, Evelyn?” Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper as he gripped the bars next to her hands. “Stop playing games and tell me what you know.”

Evelyn tilted her head, her smile turning sickeningly sweet. “Arthur.”

Julian blinked, momentarily thrown off balance. “Arthur? The venue manager at the grand hotel? What does he have to do with any of this?”

“Everything, Julian. Everything,” Evelyn chuckled softly, a dry, rasping sound. “Do you really think a mid-level hotel manager just happens to have high-definition overhead security footage of our exact table saved and ready to hand to the police within three minutes of an incident? Do you think he just stumbled onto our offshore account numbers by accident?”

The words hit Julian like a physical blow. The pieces suddenly snapped together with terrifying clarity. The venue. The specific table placement. The rapid arrival of the police. It wasn't random coincidence at all. It had been an ambush orchestrated from the very beginning.

“Arthur was never just a venue manager,” Julian whispered, horror dawning in his eyes.

“Bingo,” Evelyn confirmed, stepping back from the cell door as footsteps echoed down the corridor. “He’s Clara’s maternal uncle. A retired federal forensic accountant who spent six months working undercover at that hotel just to catch us in the act and build an airtight RICO case against your entire corporate network.”

Before Julian could process the crushing realization, the heavy metal door at the end of the cell block swung open, and two guards walked in—not to check on him, but escorting a visitor who wore an expensive tailored suit and held a thick leather briefcase.
