Chapter 8 - The Audio Confession

The tinty sound of computer speakers filled the quiet hotel room as Clara pressed play. At first, there was only the faint rustle of papers and the hum of an air conditioner, followed immediately by Julian’s familiar, smooth voice speaking with a chilling casualness.
“Once we marry her and secure the transfer of her grandfather’s trust fund, we liquidate everything and leave the country, Evelyn. Just hold it together until the wedding night.”
Then came Evelyn’s voice, sharp and anxious in response: “And what if she suspects something? She’s not stupid, Julian. She asks too many questions about your late-night office hours.”
“She won’t suspect a thing,” Julian’s recorded voice laughed softly. “She’s too trusting. And if she becomes a liability later... well, accidents happen in hospitals every day.”
Clara slammed the laptop lid down, plunging the room back into silence, but the echoes of those words reverberated inside her mind like a physical blow. Every sweet word Julian had ever spoken to her, every gentle touch, every promise of forever—it was all an elaborate, calculated deception designed to steal her inheritance and dispose of her like garbage.
A cold, fierce anger began to replace the crushing grief in her chest. She stood up from the vanity, walking over to the full-length mirror. She looked at her reflection: the white wedding dress, the veil, the sparkling diamond ring on her finger. She wasn't just a victim anymore. She was the sole beneficiary of an empire, and her husband was currently sitting in a holding cell.
She reached for her phone on the nightstand and dialed a number she had memorized years ago—her grandfather’s ruthlessly efficient corporate lawyer, Victor Sterling.

“Victor,” Clara said, her voice dropping all its previous sweetness, replaced by a cold, steely resolve. “Cancel all access to my trust fund. My husband is going away for a very long time, and I want every single cent of his assets seized before he even posts bail.”
