Chapter 11 - Shadows in the Cell

The metal door of the maximum-security holding block slammed shut with a metallic echo that seemed to vibrate straight through Julian’s bones. Stripped of his belt, his shoelaces, and any remaining shred of his corporate dignity, he sat on the edge of the thin, plastic-covered mattress in cell number twelve. The concrete walls were damp, smelling faintly of industrial disinfectant and stale despair.

His high-priced lawyer had abandoned him the moment the financial injunctions froze his entire net worth. Without money, Julian was just another inmate waiting to be chewed up by the judicial system.

A heavy shadow fell across the cell bars. Julian looked up slowly, expecting a corrections officer with paperwork. Instead, standing outside the door was Evelyn. She wore a standard-issue county jail jumpsuit, her crimson hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, her face still pale from the stomach pump procedures. Yet, despite her own confinement, a twisted, bitter smile played across her lips.

“Well, Julian,” Evelyn whispered, her voice raspy as she gripped the vertical steel bars with both hands. “Look where our grand little plan landed us. Matching outfits and everything.”

Julian stood up slowly, walking toward the bars with his jaw clenched so tight his teeth ached. “You did this, Evelyn. If you hadn’t panicked and tried to pull that stupid stunt with the syringe at the reception, we wouldn't be here.”

“Me?” Evelyn let out a harsh, barking laugh that echoed down the damp corridor. “I was executing the timeline you wrote down on your laptop, Julian! You told me Clara was getting suspicious of the trust fund transfers, and that we needed to accelerate the timetable before she signed the new pre-nup!”

“Keep your voice down,” Julian hissed, casting a wary glance down the empty hallway.

“Why? Who cares who hears us now?” Evelyn sneered, her eyes flashing with pure malice. “We lost, Julian. Clara took everything. My job, my freedom, my savings. And you know what the funniest part is? While you were sitting there thinking you were the master chess player... you forgot about the third person in our little corporate circle.”

Julian froze, a cold dread washing over him. “What are you talking about?”
