Chapter 4 - Sirens in the Night

The wailing shriek of approaching police sirens cut through the cool night air outside the grand ballroom doors, growing louder and more insistent with every passing second. Inside, the glittering crowd of wedding guests had retreated toward the perimeter of the room, whispering furiously behind cupped hands. Clara stood paralyzed near the edge of the bridal table, tears finally spilling over her flushed cheeks as she looked down at Evelyn, whose convulsions had mercifully subsided into shallow, rattling breaths.
“Police?” Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she turned her wide, terrified eyes toward Julian. “Julian, why would the police be coming here? What is going on?”
Julian opened his mouth, but no words came out. How was he supposed to explain to his innocent bride of barely two hours that her beloved friend had plotted her murder, and that he had knowingly let the assassin drink her own poison? The web of secrets they had all woven was collapsing under the harsh light of reality.
Arthur stepped back, giving Julian a final, warning look before walking toward the main entrance to let the authorities inside. Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer, followed by the authoritative voices of uniformed officers barking commands.
Julian grabbed Clara’s shaking hands, his thumbs gently stroking her knuckles in a desperate attempt to anchor her in the swirling chaos.
“Clara, listen to me,” Julian said softly, his voice trembling despite his best efforts. “Whatever happens next, whatever you hear about Evelyn or about me... I need you to know I did it all to protect you. You are my only priority.”
“Protect me from what, Julian?” Clara sobbed, pulling her hands away as red and blue flashing lights painted the ballroom walls in erratic patterns. “You’re hiding something huge. I can see it in your eyes.”

Before Julian could answer, two police officers flanked by emergency medical technicians burst through the double doors, their eyes immediately locking onto the gruesome scene at the bridal table.
