Chapter 7 - Clara’s Devastation

Back at the grand hotel suite, the celebration was a distant, grotesque memory. The jazz band had packed up, the floral arrangements were already wilting in the midnight air, and the room was entirely empty save for Clara. She sat alone at the edge of the king-sized bed, still wearing her pristine white wedding dress and veil, though the delicate fabric was now stained with dirt from the floor and her own endless tears.

The knock on the hotel room door was soft, almost tentative. Clara didn’t look up as the door slowly clicked open, revealing Arthur, the venue manager, holding a sealed manila envelope.

“Mrs. Vance?” Arthur said gently, stepping into the room with his head bowed out of respect for her misery. “I’m so sorry to intrude at a time like this, but the police asked me to hand this directly to you before they finished sweeping the ballroom.”

Clara slowly raised her head, her eyes red-rimmed and hollow. “What is this, Arthur? More proof that my entire life is a lie?”

“It’s a thumb drive and a transcript recovered from Julian’s briefcase at the front desk,” Arthur replied quietly, placing the envelope on the nightstand beside her untouched glass of water. “It contains phone recordings and encrypted messages between your husband and Evelyn dating back over a year.”

Clara’s hand trembled as she picked up the envelope. The very thought of opening it terrified her more than anything she had ever faced, yet an insatiable, burning need for the truth drove her fingers to tear the flap open. She pulled out the small black USB drive, staring at it as if it were a venomous snake coiled in her palm.

“Why would they do this to me?” Clara whispered into the empty room, her voice breaking on a sob. “We were supposed to have a future.”

She walked slowly over to the vanity desk, plugged the thumb drive into her laptop, and clicked on the first audio file labeled Vance_Hayes_Master_Plan_Final.
