Chapter 10 - The Unforgiving Gaze

Clara’s presence in the courtroom shifted the entire dynamic of the room. Julian’s lawyer stammered through a final, weak plea for supervised release, but the judge was no longer listening. Judge Howard looked past the defense table, her gaze landing squarely on Clara.
“Mrs. Vance, as the primary victim and holder of the affected assets, does the prosecution have a statement from you regarding the defendant’s request for bail?” Judge Howard asked formally.
ADA Martinez nodded deferentially, turning to look back at Clara. “Yes, Your Honor. Mrs. Vance would like to submit an emergency financial injunction and a formal victim impact statement.”
Clara stood up smoothly, buttoning her jacket with precise, unhurried movements. She walked up to the podium, her heels clicking sharp rhythms against the floor. She did not look at Julian, whose chest was heaving as he stared at her with a desperate, pleading expression.
“Your Honor,” Clara began, her voice clear, resonant, and entirely devoid of emotion. “For the past two years, I believed I was sharing my life with a man who loved me. Instead, I discovered that my marriage was nothing more than a corporate hostile takeover orchestrated by my husband and his mistress.”
Julian leaned forward, gripping the edge of the table until his knuckles turned white. “Clara, please... let me explain! It was all a misunderstanding, Evelyn twisted everything—”
“Shut up, Mr. Vance,” the judge barked, banging her gavel sharply. “Continue, Mrs. Vance.”
“I am asking this court to deny bail entirely,” Clara continued, her eyes locking onto the judge with absolute authority. “Furthermore, my legal team has frozen every corporate account, personal asset, and hidden offshore fund associated with Julian Vance. He is entirely destitute, legally and financially. If released, he has nothing left to lose—and everything to hide.”
Judge Howard lowered her reading glasses, looking down at Julian with undisguised contempt.

“Request for bail is denied,” the judge declared, striking her gavel down with a resounding crack. “The defendant will be held without bond pending trial for conspiracy to commit murder and financial fraud.”
