Chapter 1 - The Bitter Taste of Betrayal

The sharp, metallic tang of the chemical syringe still lingered in the air around the wedding reception table, though Julian had quickly hidden the evidence beneath the linen tablecloth. He wiped his damp palms against the fabric of his black suit trousers, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. Clara, his stunning bride with golden hair cascading beneath her delicate white veil, beamed brightly at him, entirely oblivious to the microscopic threat that had just hovered inches from her crystal goblet. Next to her, Evelyn sat with a posture rigid as iron, her long crimson hair framing a face drained of color. Evelyn’s pink one-shoulder dress seemed to vibrate with the tension radiating from her stiff shoulders. She had thought her lethal game of domestic sabotage was foolproof, but Julian’s lightning-fast reflex had upended the board entirely.

Julian cleared his throat, his white shirt collar suddenly feeling like a tightening noose. He looked across the table, his eyes locking onto Evelyn’s wide, terrified gaze.

“Why did you do that, Evelyn?” Julian whispered harshly, keeping his voice beneath the ambient chatter of the ballroom’s jazz quartet.

“Do what?” Evelyn hissed back, her fingers digging deep into the stem of her glass until her knuckles turned chalk white. “I was just pouring some water to settle my nerves, Julian. You’re the one acting paranoid.”

“You used a medical syringe behind a floral centerpiece,” Julian shot back, his jaw tight. “You tried to poison my wife. Don’t play innocent with me now that your twisted plan has backfired into your own lap.”

Clara tilted her head, her smile softening as she noticed the intense whispered exchange. She raised her glass higher, her cheeks flushed with the innocent joy of her wedding day.

“Hey, stop whispering you two,” Clara interrupted happily, her voice light and musical. “We are supposed to be celebrating! Julian, give us another toast. And Evelyn, you haven't touched your drink yet. Come on, let's make it official.”

Evelyn swallowed hard, her throat convulsing painfully. She stared at the swapped glass in front of her, the dark red liquid gleaming under the chandelier lights. She knew what was inside it. She knew the agonizing burn of the potassium chloride compound she had stolen from the hospital lab where she worked as a senior researcher.

“I’m not very thirsty right now, Clara,” Evelyn forced out, her voice trembling in spite of her best efforts to sound composed.

“Nonsense!” Clara insisted, nudging Evelyn’s arm playfully. “Bottoms up, girls. To forever!”

With a sinking feeling of absolute dread, Evelyn lifted the glass to her lips, trapped by the social pressure and Clara’s expectant gaze. She took a desperate sip, hoping against hope that Julian hadn’t really switched them. The moment the liquid hit her tongue, her eyes bulged in absolute horror.

“This is disgusting…” Evelyn choked out, dropping the glass as it shattered across the hardwood floor.

Julian watched in cold silence as Evelyn began to gag violently, clutching her throat while guests at neighboring tables turned to stare in sudden, stunned confusion.
