Chapter 9 - The Confession in the Lab

The heavy silence inside the carriage house was broken only by the rhythmic hum of the server racks and the distant wail of sirens echoing through the valley. Clara sank slowly to the floor, her expensive satin shoes ruined beyond recognition, pulling her knees up to her chest as she clutched the heavy metallic briefcase like a lifeline.
"Marcus called me an hour before the wedding," Clara whispered, her voice trembling so violently the words barely registered over the ambient noise of the room. "He said if I didn't help him frame you for the embezzlement, Evelyn would release the surveillance footage of my family’s bankruptcy filings to every tabloid in the country. They were going to destroy what little dignity my parents had left."
Julian stepped closer, his face hardened by a lifetime of dealing with his family's toxic manipulations. "And you thought trading Liam's life for your parents' social standing was a fair trade?"
"I thought I could manage Evelyn!" Clara cried out, her voice cracking with a desperate, hysterical edge. "I thought once we were married, the shares would transfer, and I could pay the debt back before anyone noticed. But Evelyn doesn't compromise, Julian. She doesn't negotiate. The moment you stood up to her at the reception, she activated the contingency plan."
Liam walked slowly around the desk, his movements calm and deliberate. He stopped two feet away from her, looking down at the woman he had planned to spend the rest of his life with just hours earlier. "What contingency plan, Clara?"
"The liquidation," she whispered, looking up at him with tear-filled eyes that held a genuine, profound terror. "Marcus isn't just taking over the company for the family trust. He’s selling the neurodegenerative patents to a conglomerate in Zurich tonight. The deal closes at midnight Swiss time. Once those files cross international servers, there is no paper trail left to prove you ever invented the formula."
Julian let out a sharp breath, running a hand through his gray hair. "That’s why the safe was empty. They aren't just framing Liam for financial crimes; they are erasing his entire scientific legacy so he has no leverage left in the divorce or the corporate breakup."
Liam reached down and unlatched the heavy metallic briefcase resting in Clara's lap. He lifted the lid. Inside, nestled in custom-cut black foam, were three encrypted solid-state drives and a folded holographic data disk containing the master source code for the drug trials.
"You didn't give them to Marcus," Liam said quietly, looking down at the drives.
"I couldn't," Clara choked out, a fresh tear tracking down her mud-stained cheek. "When I saw the look in your eyes when you took off that ring... I realized I had become just like Evelyn. A monster wearing an expensive dress."
May you like
Before Liam could reply, the lights in the carriage house flickered twice and died completely, plunging the laboratory into absolute darkness except for the blinking amber emergency lights on the server racks.
