Chapter 15 - The Ash and the Diamond

The federal SUV slowed to a halt at the security checkpoint outside the estate gates, but neither Liam nor Julian made a move to get out. Their eyes remained glued to the tablet screen as the hidden floor panel inside the library slowly slid open, revealing a dark, stone-lined stairwell descending into the old estate archives below.

Evelyn didn't look down the stairs. Instead, she reached into the pocket of her beige satin dress, pulled out a small, familiar object, and placed it gently in the exact center of the polished mahogany desk—right where Liam had left his wedding ring twelve hours earlier.

It was Clara’s diamond engagement ring—the one Liam had given her on the cliffs overlooking the ocean two years ago, before the corporate corruption, before the staged wedding, before the betrayal that tore their lives apart.

"She's leaving the ring," Julian whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the SUV’s engine.

"She's not leaving it," Liam said, a profound, heavy sorrow settling into his chest as he watched the screen. "She's burying it."

On the live feed, Evelyn stood up from her desk, picked up a heavy bronze candlestick holder from the side table, and deliberately smashed it against the antique floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lining the east wall of the library. Sparks showered down onto the dry, century-old leather-bound ledgers stacked below. Within seconds, a thin ribbon of gray smoke began to curl upward toward the ceiling cameras, catching the morning light like a shroud.

The audio feed began to distort with a sharp hiss of static as the flames caught the dry timber of the floorboards.

"We need to go back," Julian urged, his hand reaching for the door handle. "She's going down into the vault."

"She's not running, Dad," Liam said softly, placing a steady hand over his father's wrist to stop him. "She's sealing the tomb."

On the screen, Evelyn walked slowly toward the open stairwell leading down into the archives, her beige satin dress sweeping gracefully across the floor. She paused at the top of the stone steps, looked directly into the camera lens one last time, and pulled the heavy iron lever that closed the reinforced steel vault door from the inside, cutting off the camera feed with a deafening, metallic crash of absolute finality.

The tablet screen flickered twice and went completely black, plunging the cabin into silence.
