Chapter 2 - Rain-Slicked Asphalt

The bitter October rain hammered against the glass canopy of the Grandview courtyard, turning the manicured lawn into a blur of dark shadows and neon reflections. Liam walked with long, measured strides, his black tuxedo jacket soaked through at the shoulders, the damp fabric clinging to his muscular frame like a second skin. Julian trailed two paces behind him, his gray suit jacket thrown over his arm, his gray hair plastered to his forehead by the relentless downpour. Further back, Clara hiked up the heavy tulle and lace of her pristine white gown, her expensive heels sinking uselessly into the mud of the garden path.

"Liam, stop walking! You are making a horrific scene out of nothing!" Clara cried out, her voice pitching upward in frustration as she slipped on a slick stone paver.

Liam didn't slow his pace. He reached the edge of the valet curb where his black sedan sat idling, the hazard lights blinking a rhythmic, hypnotic orange against the asphalt. He reached for the door handle, but Julian’s weathered hand descended firmly onto his shoulder, stopping him in his tracks.

"Son, running away from the venue doesn't change what was just spoken inside that room," Julian said quietly, his voice carrying the weathered timber of a man who had buried too many truths in his lifetime. "Your mother didn't just insult a wedding cake. She was talking about the provenance of the money that paid for this entire evening."

Liam whipped around, the rain plastering his dark hair across his forehead, his tear-streaked face twisted in a mask of bitter betrayal. "You knew? You knew what she was planning to do?"

"I knew Evelyn," Julian corrected grimly, his dark eyes shifting past his son to where Clara finally caught up, panting and shivering in the freezing wind.

Clara wrapped her bare arms around her shivering frame, her makeup beginning to run in dark streaks down her cheeks. "Liam, your mother hates me because I come from nothing. You know how she is! She thinks because her family built this hotel chain, she owns the universe and everyone in it."

"Shut up, Clara," Liam whispered, the softness of his tone far more terrifying than any shout. He reached into his wet breast pocket and pulled out his phone, the screen glowing brightly in the dim courtyard light. The text message he had ignored inside the ballroom was still flashing on the display, sent from a burner number just three minutes before the ceremony concluded.

Julian stepped closer, squinting at the glowing screen. The text contained a single, high-resolution photograph taken through the frosted glass of the bridal suite earlier that afternoon. It showed Clara standing over Liam’s open briefcase, her hands hastily sliding a bulky manila envelope into her designer handbag, her face illuminated by the cold glow of stolen currency.

Clara froze, the color draining entirely from her face as she stared at the glowing phone in Liam's hand.
