Chapter 14 - The Final Broadcast

Julian tapped the blinking alert on the encrypted tablet, bringing up a live feed from the security camera mounted directly above the main library doors inside the Vance estate.

On the small screen, the heavy oak doors of the library were standing wide open. The room was illuminated only by the gray morning light filtering through the tall arched windows. Evelyn Vance sat alone at her massive mahogany desk, her beige satin dress looking stiff and formal in the empty room, her hands resting calmly folded on the polished wood surface.

She wasn't looking at the door, and she wasn't looking at her phone. Her gaze was fixed directly on the camera lens mounted in the corner of the ceiling—staring straight into the lens with an unblinking, chilling intensity as if she knew exactly who was watching on the other end of the secure feed.

"She knows we're watching," Julian murmured, his hand hovering over the tablet screen.

"She's not waiting for the marshals," Liam said, leaning forward in his seat, his eyes locked onto the small screen. "She's waiting for us."

Before Julian could instruct the driver to turn the vehicle around, the audio on the tablet feed clicked on, broadcasting Evelyn’s voice directly into the quiet cabin of the federal SUV. Her voice didn't tremble; it carried the same crisp, cultured authority that had dominated the Vance family for half a century.

"You think you’ve won a clean victory, Liam," Evelyn's voice echoed from the tablet, calm and measured. "You think by handing the patents to the government, you've saved your precious research from the corporate machine."

Liam leaned closer, his jaw tightening. "You lost, Mother. The accounts are frozen, the board has dissolved, and your empire is gone."

A faint, humorless smile touched the corners of Evelyn’s lips on the screen. "An empire isn't brick and mortar, my boy. It’s an idea. And the idea that power always belongs to those ruthless enough to take it... that doesn't die just because the ledger is balanced."

She slowly reached down beside the desk, her fingers disappearing briefly from the camera's frame before returning with a small, heavy silver key—the exact key that unlocked the private family vault hidden beneath the estate's foundations, where the original, unredacted corporate charters from 1924 were stored.

"What is she doing?" Julian whispered, his face draining of color as he recognized the key. "That vault hasn't been opened since your grandfather died."

On the screen, Evelyn inserted the silver key into a concealed floor panel beneath her desk and turned it with a sharp, metallic click. Instantly, a deep, mechanical rumble vibrated through the audio feed as the old foundation walls shifted.
