Chapter 5 - The Ashes of the Estate

The Vance family estate loomed out of the rolling hills like a gothic fortress carved from ancient limestone, its towering wrought-iron gates standing wide open as if inviting the storm inside. Liam’s sedan rolled slowly up the crushed-limestone driveway, the tires crunching loudly in the quiet night. The massive double oak doors of the manor were unlatched, revealing the warm, blinding glow of the grand foyer where Evelyn Vance sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, sipping amber scotch from a heavy crystal tumbler as if nothing of consequence had transpired.

Julian stepped out of the car first, his boots heavy on the wet stone, his shoulders squared against the impending confrontation. Liam followed closely behind him, his wet tuxedo jacket discarded in the car, leaving him in a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, muscular tension in his arms.

Evelyn didn't look up as they entered, her gaze fixed entirely on the dying embers of the massive stone fireplace. "You always had terrible taste in decor, Liam," she said evenly, her voice carrying the smooth, cultured cadence of old money and absolute authority. "And an even worse eye for character. That girl was selling you out before the ink on your marriage license was even dry."

"You bought her, Mother," Liam said, his voice dangerously low as he walked across the Persian rug, stopping ten feet away from her chair. "You engineered the entire relationship from the day we met. You planted her at the gallery, you funded her debts, and you dangled my company over her head like a guillotine."

Evelyn finally raised her head, her sharp blue eyes—the exact same shade as Liam's—meeting his without a flicker of remorse or hesitation. "I protected the family name from an ambitious nobody who wanted your patents for her brother’s venture capital firm. Did you really think I wouldn't run a background check on the woman who was about to inherit forty percent of our voting stock?"

"She was my wife," Liam whispered, the core of his grief finally hardening into something cold and indestructible.

"She was an asset that outlived her utility," Evelyn corrected coolly, setting her glass down on the mahogany side table with a sharp click. She gestured toward the heavy oak desk behind her where a stack of legal documents lay waiting next to a Montblanc pen. "Sign the transfer, Liam. Walk away from the research lab, take your father to some quiet cabin in Maine, and live out your days on a comfortable stipend. It’s the only mercy I have left to offer."

Julian stepped up beside his son, his voice trembling with a lifetime of accumulated resentment. "You are destroying your own family, Evelyn, just to feed an addiction to control that will outlive you."

"The family is the business, Julian," Evelyn replied without missing a beat, standing up from her chair with effortless grace despite her advanced years. She walked over to the desk, picked up the pen, and held it out toward Liam. "And I am the only thing standing between this dynasty and total collapse."

Liam looked at the pen, then up at his mother’s unyielding face. He slowly reached out his hand, his fingers brushing against the cold gold band of the fountain pen, before stopping dead as his phone buzzed violently in his pocket once more.
