Chapter 13 - Protective Custody

The cold autumn rain had finally stopped, leaving a heavy, misting fog clinging to the rolling hills as Liam walked out of the carriage house flanked by two federal marshals. The morning light was beginning to break over the eastern horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of bruised purple and slate gray.

Marcus stood on the stone steps of the laboratory, watching helplessly as his older brother was guided toward the third black SUV parked near the edge of the driveway. "You can't do this, Liam! You're destroying everything our grandfather built!"

Liam stopped at the open door of the vehicle and looked back at his younger brother one last time. The anger he had felt inside the Grandview Ballroom hours earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a profound, hollow exhaustion that felt remarkably like peace.

"Grandfather built a clinic for injured miners, Marcus," Liam said quietly, his voice carrying clearly through the damp morning air. "Mother turned it into a bank. It’s time to give it back."

He ducked his head and slid into the back seat of the SUV, the heavy armored door closing with a solid, definitive thud that echoed across the quiet estate grounds. The vehicle shifted into gear, its tires crunching smoothly down the crushed-limestone driveway as it pulled away from the estate, leaving Marcus standing alone in the gray dawn light.

Inside the SUV, the interior was quiet and sterile, smelling faintly of leather and ozone. In the front passenger seat sat Julian, his gray suit jacket neatly folded across his lap, holding a secure encrypted tablet that was streaming real-time financial data from the Zurich bank servers.

"The transfer was successfully intercepted three minutes before the midnight deadline," Julian said without turning around, his voice carrying the deep, steady relief of a man who had finally put down a burden he had carried for decades. "The clinical trial data is safe in the federal repository. The research can continue under public oversight."

Liam leaned his head back against the leather headrest, closing his eyes for the first time in twenty-four hours. "And Mother?"

"She's still locked in the main library," Julian replied grimly, staring out the windshield at the mist-covered road ahead. "Refusing to speak to anyone without her corporate legal team present. But her lawyers walked off the payroll an hour ago when the asset freeze hit."

"What about Clara?" Liam asked, his voice softening just a fraction.

Julian tapped the screen of the tablet, bringing up a secure transport log from the local precinct. "She’s cooperating with the district attorney's office in exchange for witness protection. She’s already on a flight out of the state."

Liam didn't answer. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his bare left hand, the ring finger looking pale and exposed where the heavy platinum and diamond band had rested for six months.

Suddenly, the secure tablet in Julian’s hands began to chime frantically, flashing a high-priority system alert from an internal estate camera feed that shouldn't have been active.
