Chapter 6 - The Burner’s Message

Liam ignored the outstretched pen, his fingers curling into a tight fist as he pulled his hand back from the desk. He reached into his pocket, retrieved his phone, and unlocked the screen. The new notification wasn't another text message; it was an automated alert from his private cloud storage server, signaling that an encrypted file he had hidden deep within the corporate network had just been accessed from an unauthorized IP address originating from inside the house.

"What is that?" Evelyn asked, her sharp eyes narrowing as she noticed the sudden shift in her son's posture. The corporate armor Liam had worn for years seemed to strip away in a single second, replaced by the dangerous, calculating focus of a man who had nothing left to lose.

"It's the insurance policy you forgot to check for," Liam said softly, his thumbs flying across the glass screen with practiced speed.

Marcus rushed into the foyer from the back hallway, his face pale, his phone clutched in his hand like a live grenade. "Mother, we have a catastrophic leak. Someone just dumped the entire unredacted ledger of the offshore accounts into the SEC’s public portal. Every shell company, every tax evasion workaround from the last twenty years—it’s all out there."

Evelyn’s composure finally cracked, a microscopic twitch of her left eyebrow betraying the sudden, violent surge of panic beneath her immaculate exterior. "That’s impossible. The encryption keys are stored on the main server in Zurich. Only the managing director has access."

"Or someone who copied the master credentials during yesterday's board meeting," Liam said, looking up from his phone with a cold, humorless smile. He turned the screen toward his mother, displaying a live feed of a bank transfer receipt routing twenty million dollars from the family trust into an unknown offshore account held under Clara’s maiden name—with Evelyn’s digital signature authorizing the transaction.

Julian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat. "Evelyn... what have you done? You framed yourself?"

"I didn't authorize that transfer!" Evelyn snapped, her voice losing its cultured veneer for the first time, sharp and panicked as she stepped toward the desk. "That’s a forgery! Someone is framing me!"

"It’s as real as the wedding cake you called trash, Mother," Liam said steadily. He slid his phone back into his pocket and turned his back on the desk, walking toward the grand entryway. "The federal marshals are twenty minutes away. I suggest you start packing light."

"Liam, you cannot do this to your own family!" Marcus shouted, stepping into his path with a desperate look in his eyes. "If the SEC freezes the assets, Vance Global goes into receivership by morning. Thousands of employees lose their pensions!"

"Then maybe they should have built an empire on something other than sand," Liam replied without breaking stride, pushing open the heavy oak doors and stepping back out into the cool, cleansing rain.
