Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The air inside the idling sedan was thick with the scent of damp wool, expensive perfume, and suffocating tension. Liam sat in the driver's seat, the heater blasting hot air against his frozen fingers, though he made no move to put the car in drive. Julian occupied the passenger seat, his arms crossed tightly over his chest as he stared out the fogged-up windshield at the glittering lights of the Grandview Ballroom in the distance. In the back seat, Clara huddled in the corner, her ruined wedding dress taking up half the space, her chest rising and falling in shallow, panicked breaths.
"Explain it," Liam said without turning around, his voice completely devoid of the warmth that had defined their three-year relationship.
"It's a fake," Clara spat out immediately, though her voice lacked any real conviction. Her fingers clawed frantically at the ruined lace of her hem. "Someone is trying to sabotage us, Liam! You know how many people envied our engagement. Your business partners, your mother’s associates—anyone could have manipulated a photo."
"That manila envelope contains the emergency liquidation documents for my father’s medical research fund," Liam said slowly, turning his head to look back at her through the rearview mirror. His eyes were completely dry now, hollowed out by a sudden, terrifying clarity. "The exact funds required to keep the clinical trials running for another six months. My signature was forged on the transfer papers yesterday afternoon while I was at the tailor."
Julian didn't turn around, but his jaw clenched so hard the muscle feathered visibly in his cheek. "The transfer requires two signatures, Liam. Yours, and the corporate secretary's."
"Mother," Liam murmured, the realization dawning with the crushing weight of an avalanche. He looked from his father to the trembling woman in the back seat. "You didn't steal the money for yourself, did you, Clara? You were working for her. My own mother hired my fiancée to hollow out my company so I'd have no choice but to crawl back to the family estate and take my place in the corporate machine."
Clara stopped tearing at her dress. She lowered her hands, her chin lifting with a sudden, desperate defiance as she realized the game was entirely up. The frightened bride facade vanished, replaced by the hardened, transactional coldness of a woman who had played a high-stakes gamble and lost everything on the river card.
"She offered me enough to buy my parents' house back from the bank," Clara said, her voice dropping into a flat, unapologetic register that made Julian’s eyes flash with sudden fury. "What was I supposed to do, Liam? Live in a cramped apartment while you played noble scientist with grant money that never materialized? Evelyn offered security. Your family is an empire of glass, and sooner or later, it was all going to shatter anyway."

Liam reached for the door handle, but before he could push it open, a sharp tap sounded against the driver's side window.
