Chapter 9 - The Last Will and Testament

Julian stared at the handwritten words, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
“Too weak to stop them.”
His father—a man he had always viewed as an impenetrable fortress of strength and corporate dominance—had admitted defeat on paper.
Julian quickly picked up the small audio recorder and pressed the play button.
For a second, there was only tape hiss. Then, his father’s raspy, tired voice filled the silent study.
“Julian, if you’re hearing this, I’ve made a terrible mistake. I trusted Arthur Vance—no, not Arthur—I trusted your mother’s brother, Marcus, and Sarah’s father, to manage the overseas accounts. They used the foundation to launder millions. When I tried to back out, they threatened to ruin our family name. Olivia found out, and I let them silence her to protect the empire. I am a coward.”
The recorder clicked off.
Julian dropped the device. It hit the Persian rug with a dull thud, the revelation crashing down on him with devastating force.
Arthur wasn't the loyal mentor he claimed to be. Arthur was Marcus’s primary partner.
"No," Julian whispered, backing away from the safe as if it were venomous. "That's impossible. Arthur saved me. Arthur protected the company."
Or so he had thought.
Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the study clicked open.
Footsteps echoed softly on the hardwood floor of the hallway, moving with deliberate, unhurried precision.
Julian whipped around, grabbing the heavy brass letter opener from the desk just as a tall figure stepped into the doorway, framed by the dim light of the corridor.
It wasn't a burglar. It was Arthur.
Arthur looked older in the dim light, his shoulders slightly hunched, but his eyes held a cold, calculated ruthlessness Julian had never seen before.
"I told you not to come here, Julian," Arthur said softly, his voice devoid of any warmth. "Some doors are better left locked."
Julian gripped the brass letter opener tighter, his chest heaving.
May you like
"You lied to me," Julian growled, his voice shaking with fury. "You were part of it from the very beginning."
