Chapter 14 - The Final Confrontation

Julian and Lucy spun around toward the entrance of Unit 402.
Standing in the doorway, drenched in rain and holding a firearm with terrifying steadiness, was Arthur Vance.
Arthur’s face was twisted in a mask of cold desperation, his clothes soaked through, looking every bit the cornered criminal he had become.
"Put the tape down, Julian," Arthur commanded, his voice shaking slightly with adrenaline. "You think you've won, but you're standing in the middle of a federal maritime zone. One word from me, and my associates offshore will sink this entire pier."
"It's over, Arthur," Julian said firmly, stepping in front of Lucy to shield her from the gun barrel. "The police are already here. Detective Miller is right outside."
Arthur let out a sharp, mocking laugh.
"Detective Miller is on my payroll, Julian. She has been for a decade," Arthur sneered, tightening his grip on the trigger. "Now, hand over the tape, or neither of you leaves this warehouse alive."
Before Julian could respond, the screech of tires echoed outside, followed by the blinding glare of multiple police headlights flooding the warehouse interior.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapon!" a voice boomed through a megaphone from outside.
It wasn't Detective Miller. It was a tactical unit led by the FBI's internal affairs division, their assault rifles drawn and aimed directly at the doorway.
Arthur’s face drained of color. He looked from the armed agents at the door back to Julian, realizing his empire of lies had finally run out of runway.
"It's over, Arthur," Julian repeated softly.
With a low curse of defeat, Arthur slowly lowered his gun, letting it clatter to the concrete floor as the federal agents swarmed the unit, slamming him against the wall and slapping steel cuffs onto his wrists.
Detective Miller was nowhere to be seen, her corruption exposed along with the rest of the conspiracy.
As Arthur was dragged away into the rain, Julian let out a long, shuddering breath, the weight of a decade lifting from his shoulders.
He looked down at the microcassette still clutched safely in his hand, then turned to Lucy.
"We did it," Julian whispered.

Lucy smiled faintly, wiping the last of the rain from her face, but her eyes suddenly widened as she pointed toward a hidden compartment at the very back of the warehouse wall.
