Chapter 8 - Secrets Behind the Portrait

The rain had slowed to a steady, depressing drizzle by the time Julian’s car crunched up the gravel driveway of the ancestral Vance estate.
The sprawling mansion stood dark and imposing against the stormy night sky, looking more like a mausoleum than a home.
Julian parked near the grand double doors, grabbed a heavy-duty flashlight from his glove compartment, and stepped out into the cold night air.
He unlocked the heavy front door, stepping into the familiar, wood-scented foyer that now felt profoundly haunted.
He didn't turn on the main lights; instead, he swept his flashlight beam across the dust-covered antique furniture until he reached the heavy oak-paneled study at the end of the hall.
There it hung: the massive oil portrait of his late father, Cornelius Vance, staring down with stern, unblinking authority.
Julian approached the painting, placed his hands on the gilded frame, and swung it outward on its hidden hinges.
Revealed behind the canvas was a heavy steel wall safe with a digital keypad.
Julian punched in his father’s birthday. The screen flashed red. Access Denied.
He tried his own birthday. Access Denied.
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and thought back to the day his father taught him about corporate integrity—the date the company was first founded.
He typed the numbers slowly: 10-14-82.
A satisfying electronic click echoed through the quiet study as the heavy steel door swung open.
Julian flashed his light inside. The safe wasn't empty.
Sitting on the felt-lined shelf was a heavy leather ledger and a small, old-fashioned audio cassette recorder identical to the one Lucy had mentioned.
Julian reached out, his fingers brushing the cold leather of the ledger.
As he pulled it out, a folded piece of paper fluttered to the floor, landing face-up at his feet.
It was a handwritten note from his father, dated just one week before he passed away.
Julian knelt down, picked up the note, and shone his flashlight on the fading ink.

“If you are reading this, Julian, it means Sarah’s family has found the truth about the missing funds, and I was too weak to stop them.”
