Chapter 2 - Echoes of the Past

The heavy silence inside the cathedral felt suffocating as the groom stared down at the checks.

"Where did you get these?" he repeated, his voice barely a whisper, yet it commanded the entire room.

Lucy stood her ground, wiping a stray wet lock of brown hair from her face.

"From my mother’s lockbox," Lucy answered steadily, her dark eyes locking onto his. "The day she passed away. She told me to bring them to you the moment you tried to walk down this aisle."

The bride, clutching her ruined white bouquet, stepped between them, her chest rising and falling rapidly.

"Don't listen to this pathological liar, Julian!" the bride hissed, her voice trembling with manufactured outrage. "She’s a disturbed kid pulling a stunt. Security, get her out of my sight right now!"

Julian didn’t move. He held up a slip of heavy cream-colored paper.

"These signatures belong to my company’s foundation, Sarah," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Signed five years ago. Millions of dollars. All routed through an account that was supposed to be closed."

Sarah’s face drained of all color, her manicured fingers digging into the fabric of her wedding gown.

"It’s an old corporate audit error," Sarah stammered, forcing an unconvincing laugh. "You know how messy the merger was."

"This isn't a merger error," Lucy interrupted, stepping closer. "This is hush money. My mother didn't just work for your family, Sarah. She uncovered your mother’s embezzlement scheme, and these checks were the quarterly payments to keep her quiet."

Gasps erupted from the pews as the truth began to claw its way into the light.

Julian’s gaze snapped from the checks to Sarah, reading the sheer panic plastered across her face.

"Is this true?" Julian asked, his voice cracking with a sudden vulnerability.

Sarah backed away slowly, shaking her head.

"No, Julian, she’s lying to ruin us," Sarah sobbed, finally shedding genuine tears of defeat.

Julian looked back down at the envelope, noticing a folded letter at the very bottom that he hadn’t seen before.
