Chapter 4 - The Mentor’s Return

The cathedral felt smaller now, suffocating under the weight of decades-old secrets finally coming to light.

Julian stared at Arthur, his mentor’s face etched with a profound, weary sadness.

"You knew?" Julian asked, the betrayal cutting deeper than Sarah’s deception. "You knew all along about the embezzlement?"

Arthur shook his head slowly, removing his damp fedora.

"I knew something was wrong, Julian, but I didn't have the proof," Arthur admitted, looking directly at Sarah, who was now backed against the altar. "Olivia had the proof. She was your father’s most trusted accountant before he passed. She discovered that Sarah’s father was systematically draining the company’s pension fund."

Sarah let out a bitter, defensive laugh, wiping her nose with the back of her hand.

"Oh, please! A disgruntled employee and a bitter old man trying to ruin the happiest day of my life!" Sarah shouted, her voice echoing shrilly. "You have no legal documents, Arthur! Just a dead woman’s note and some forged checks brought in by a stray kid!"

"They aren't forged, Sarah," a calm voice interrupted from the side entrance near the vestry.

A sharp-dressed woman in a gray trench coat stepped into the light, holding a heavy leather-bound ledger.

It was Detective Miller from the financial crimes division.

"We executed a search warrant on Sarah’s family estate this morning," Detective Miller announced, flashing her badge. "We found the matching ledger, the digital transfer records, and the offshore accounts tied directly to Sarah’s personal social security number."

Julian felt the ground beneath him sway. He looked at the woman he had loved, realizing he had been sleeping beside an absolute stranger.

"Sarah," Julian whispered, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. "Is any of this true?"

Sarah stopped trying to smile. Her expression hardened into something cold, venomous, and unrecognizable.

"You were just a stepping stone, Julian," Sarah snarled, her mask finally dropping away entirely. "Your family took everything from mine generations ago. I was just taking it back."
