Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

The confession hung in the damp cathedral air, heavy and absolute.
Sarah stood amid her cascading white veil, looking less like a radiant bride and more like a cornered animal.
"You’re insane," Julian said, his voice flat, drained of all anger, leaving only a hollow emptiness.
"I’m ambitious," Sarah retorted, lifting her chin defiantly even as flashing red and blue lights began to bleed through the stained-glass windows, signaling the arrival of more police units outside.
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from her belt.
"Sarah Vance—or whatever your legal alias is today—you are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, and obstruction of justice," Detective Miller stated professionally, grabbing Sarah’s wrist.
Sarah didn't fight back. She merely glared at Lucy with pure venom as she was led down the aisle, her expensive white train dragging through the puddles of rain tracked in by the girl.
As the heavy doors closed behind them, swallowing the commotion of the arrest, the cathedral returned to a haunting, echoing quiet.
Julian stood frozen at the altar, still clutching the brown envelope and the incriminating checks.
Arthur walked up to him gently, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry you had to find out this way, son," Arthur murmured. "Your father would have been proud of how you handled it, though."
Julian slowly turned his head to look at Lucy, who was standing quietly near the baptismal font, wiping her wet hands on her jeans.
"Why did you do it, Lucy?" Julian asked, his voice cracking. "You could have stayed away. You didn't owe me anything."
Lucy looked up, meeting his vulnerable gaze with an astonishing maturity that defied her young years.
"I didn't do it for you," Lucy said quietly, stepping closer. "I did it because my mother spent the last ten years of her life trying to clear her name, and I promised her she wouldn't die a thief."
Julian nodded slowly, a wave of profound guilt washing over him as he realized his father’s legacy had nearly been stolen entirely.
"Your mother was a brave woman," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "And I owe her everything."
Lucy looked down at the brown envelope still clutched in Julian's hand.

"There's one more thing inside," Lucy whispered. "Something my mother said you wouldn't believe until you saw it yourself."
