Chapter 12 - Race Against Time

The tires of Julian’s car screeched as he took a sharp turn toward the industrial district down by the docks.

The rain hammered relentlessly against the windshield, blurring the neon lights of the old warehouses that lined the dark waterfront.

Julian glanced at the dashboard clock: 11:45 PM.

He had left Arthur behind at the estate, but he knew the mentor-turned-mastermind had other operatives already stationed at the storage facility.

He pulled his car hard to the left, killing the headlights a block away from Unit 402 to avoid detection.

The warehouse district was eerily quiet, save for the rhythmic crashing of the dark ocean waves against the concrete sea wall.

Julian slipped out of the car into the freezing rain, keeping low as he navigated the shadows between shipping containers until he reached the rusted metal door of Unit 402.

To his horror, the padlock was already broken, dangling limply from the latch. The heavy door stood slightly ajar, a sliver of yellow light spilling out onto the wet pavement.

Julian pulled a heavy iron pipe he had grabbed from his trunk, gripping it tightly in his right hand.

He crept toward the entrance, holding his breath as he peered through the gap in the door.

Inside, the small storage unit was filled with stacked cardboard boxes and filing cabinets.

Standing in the center of the room was a tall, imposing man in a dark jacket, holding a flashlight.

And tied securely to a wooden chair near the back was Lucy, her mouth taped shut with duct tape, her dark eyes wide with terror and defiance.

"I told you to check the upper shelf," a gruff voice echoed from the corner of the room, belonging to a second operative out of Julian’s direct line of sight. "If the master tape isn't here, Arthur’s going to skin us both."

Lucy shook her head violently, letting out a muffled cry through the tape as she spotted Julian standing silently in the shadows of the doorway.

Julian’s grip on the iron pipe tightened. He knew he was outnumbered, but he had run out of places to run.
